Hi everyone,
I'll be flying out of Stansted in a few weeks.
Travelling on a Friday, returning on a Wednesday.
I've got a 16-25 railcard.
I was wondering what the cheapest and least hassle method would be to get there?
Thanks

Also depends on what time of day you're travelling, and whether you really mean cheapest, or want some flexibility following your flight back! Cheapest = Advance fare = chance of flight delay = missing your booked train = having to buy new ticket.

Cheapest and least hassle - I'm afraid it's a case of "pick one of the two", when it comes to Stansted!

You can sometimes get cheaper "Advance Open Return" fares directly through the Stansted Express website, but the price depends on how far in advance you're looking to travel.

Confusingly, unlike normal Advance fares, "Advance Open Return" fares are valid on any Stansted Express service within the ticket's date-wise validity.

The "Advance" part of their name only refers to the fact that these discounted fares are only available if you buy several days or weeks in advance - unlike normal Advance fares, which can often be available even just a few minutes before the train departs. No scope for confusion there!

Otherwise your next cheapest option is probably to get a (normal) Advance ticket to somewhere like Bishops Stortford and then to get a bus from there, or to get a coach from London Victoria or Stratford etc. Clearly that's much slower and less convenient, but if you're looking for the absolute cheapest option, that's probably it.

I'd say for the Stratford to Stansted coach service you are being a little unfair to National Express, the coach service in real times is as fast as the comparable rail service especially if you adhere to the central London connection times for rail. Coming in on hs1 it would be my choice of route and with the Jubilee Line coming in to Waterloo and London Bridge on a non Thameslink service too. Of course Nat Ex doesn't suffer from chronic unreliability caused by planned improvement works and industrial action either

Looking at brfares the only ticket that will fit your needs is the £22.80 16-25 discounted Anytime Return, the only Off-Peak ticket is a day return.
Doesn't seem too bad. Considering.

Fair enough yes, how much is it to Bishops Stortford + (£2 bus fare)?
All of them?
Yes, any. I originally put Liverpool street.

How much is the coach compared to rail?

Looks like the best fare for that would be the £19.20 off peak return (brfares), which you could use to return on any day within a month.
So that'd be
£19.20 ticket (which is more restrictive in terms of what trains are usable)
£2 outbound bus
£2 return bus
Which at £23.20 is more expencive than the £22.80 through train ticket.

It depends where you start from.

Going from Liverpool Street or Stratford, there's a coach every 30 minutes for much of the day and it's £17 Return, though that's non-refundable if you don't travel. Journey time is 1 hour 10 minutes from Liverpool Street and 50 minutes from Stratford.

From Victoria Coach Station, Baker Street, Finchley Road or Golders Green they're also every 30 minutes, at a Return fare of £17.60.

From Paddington they're hourly, and also £17.60 Return, but with a 2 hour journey time.

These advance fares can be undercut by buying through Ryanair

Ok, I recon the train would be most worth it for me, I'd pay more incase the NX service gets stuck in traffic for example, thank you all for the advice.
