I will be travelayling Glasgow - Edinburgh. I will be going out one day and coming back a couple of days later. I have a railcard.

The cheapest I can find is an Anytime Day Single Route: XC Only at £5.60 single (so £11.20 for a return)

I can get you on the Megabus tomorrow from £1 each way. Some are even at reasonable times (13:30, 14:53)

I'm pretty sure that's the cheapest ticket between Glasgow and Edinburgh. You're obviously restricted to the XC trains only, but with the mainline closed there isn't really a time penalty associated with this, just a restriction to 1tp2h. It's only £8.25 off-peak single on the any permitted route, so it's not much more if you particularly need to be on a different train.

There are, sadly, no period returns. All returns between Glasgow and Edinburgh are day returns, so yes you will need the two tickets pretty much regardless.

I am all in favour of looking for bargains, but the fair quoted by the OP at about 10p. a mile for the return, sounds very good value. If it got much lower they would be paying you for going!

^I think the XC only fares used to be A LOT cheaper, back in the days where they ran twice a day. It is still great value, mind.

An Off-Peak return from Eskbank to Glasgow is £11.50 and does not restrict you to any specific route or TOC.

Scotrail said they would introduce £5 (£7.50 1st) advance fares between cities in Scotland. Not sure if the Edinburgh to Glasgow route has them yet.

I doubt it, and I doubt it will ever exist between these two places.

There have never been Advance tickets between Glasgow and Edinburgh from Scotrail. I'm not aware of any plans to introduce them, and would be very surprised if they are ever sold.

When it comes to ScotRail stuff, pretty much any "between cities" mention excludes the Edinburgh-Glasgow routes. All the "seven cities" stuff is Glasgow-Stirling-Perth-Dundee-Aberdeen, Glasgow-Perth-Inverness, Edinburgh-Dundee-Aberdeen, Edinburgh-Perth-Inverness and Aberdeen-Inverness. These are the routes that will be getting the HSTs, these are the routes for the cheap advances.

Slightly cheaper would be Glasgow to Shawfair £10.45 off-peak return, again with no restrictions to a particular TOC or route.

That's an Off-Peak Day Return.

The Shawfair off-peak is a very useful trick. I've been using it since the the borders line opened on the Stirling route. Return portion is valid 30 days.

It's saving me about £6 on buying 2 singles to connect with Advance tickets at Edinburgh.

Still to try out " breaking" my journey at Edinburgh Park though (for Airport).
