Trains only stop at City Thameslink between 04:45 and 23:00 Monday to Friday, and between 09:00 and 21:00 Saturday, with no service at all on Sundays. Is there a reason for this seemingly arbitrary cessation in service mid-evening, beyond the City being "too quiet" to warrant a service at these times?

Purely from an operational point of view, what happens if a train due to stop at City Thameslink is late enough to push it past this evening curfew? Does it still stop, even if there are trains in front which don't as they are scheduled after this time?

All in all it seems a bit of a strange situation – the cost of staff to open the station until the end of service every day would surely pay for itself in extra footfall? The station is a stone's throw from St Paul's Cathedral and various other attractions in that part of the City, and Sunday is as busy a day for tourists as any other.

Seeing as northbound trains stop there anyway to change from third rail to overhead power I do think there’s a case for opening the station on more conventional hours.

Whilst I agree it wouldn’t cost much to extend opening hours, it’s right by both Blackfriars and Farringdon that it doesn’t really inconvenience anyone much by shutting. Both stations are suitable alternatives.

I can remember when Cannon Street on the District and Circle Lines closed at weekends, hardly imaginable now despite the closeness of Mansion House and Monument.

Didn't Temple close on Sundays too, back in that era? (And others I think...)

I’d assume there are different staffing requirements between a train stopping to changeover (without opening the doors) and actually serve the station as a public stop?

When power is being changed over and a train doesn’t call there, the doors remain shut throughout.

Pretty much - needed to get from Bank to Brighton late at night and was in a rush to catch the train so got the 15 to City Thameslink. Of course, City Thameslink was closed at almost 1am in the morning, but Blackfriars was only five minutes down the road! (For reference, please leave plenty of time if you plan to catch a last train home.)

City Thameslink was closed today because of engineering works in the Thameslink core.
