I’ve only noticed this now but why do 69008-69011 have a second orange thing on the cab ends whereas 69001-007 don’t? Are certain units required for different operations?

It’s an additional electrical connector fitted to 3 of them for some reason to do with hauling EMU’s around. Was mentioned a few times in the main Class 69 thread:

Thanks, it seems as though 4 units have been fitted with the electrical connectors. I saw 69008 on Friday on a class 701 drag which has the connector

Basically replacements for similarly fitted GBRf 47727, 47739 & 47749 which are said to be nearing retirement

Exactly, the control jumpers are visible in these photos of 47727 (hauling 701029), 47749 and 69008.

In addition to the additional jumper socket, I beleive 69008 up have emu Deler Couplings too, in order to couple diectly to so-fitted stock and opperate their brakes.
