Hello,

Me an my partner were discussing Micro Machines, came about from talking about something else, food probably, as the usual discussions move from subject to subject in bizarre ways!

Anyhow it was an old Mega Drive game I forgot about until then! It got me thinking, I wonder what the other old classics were? Do you remember any old ones?
Compared to today's standards, the graphics are horrendous but even with the likes of Forza and Gran Turismo, these old games are never too old and are still epic to play on an emulator (or console if you still have the original), and I've been playing them on emulator's in recent years too, only because I can save ! Here's some I remember:

Super Hang-on

This was the first driving game I ever had, as my late dad was a biker, he got me this. I was hooked pretty much! Although I did find this bloody hard, it had a fantastic soundtrack.

It just proved you didn't need scenery to enjoy it either, as it was basically the same grass/sand/tarmac throughout with the odd signs here and there.

I always remember getting peeved off at how the 'AI' would always thunder off in the distance and make you catch up. I think the funniest part was when you fell off, if you were last you still got overtaken by 6 or so bikes :o, where did they come from?
I never really managed to overtake many bikes, I'd always crash into one or fall off at some corner as I was going too fast.

My favorite track was always 'Outride a Crisis', great track to race to :)

Road Rash

I had had RR2 and RR3 'Tour de Force'. I don't remember having RR1 though, unsure if it was actually out on the Mega Drive. Compared to Super Hang-on, I could actually keep up with the bikers ! The basic graphics and handling was made up by the gameplay. Actually I read somewhere that game developers back then were always trying to make games more different and challenging just to make up for the graphics and handling, and for Road Rash they hit the nail on the head.

What better way to have a bike race and take your rage out on the AI! If I missed one I'd slow down to make sure I had the opportunity to knock the rider off!!
Of course it had to be done with a rage face and mashing the buttons to hell! Of course trying to dodge the cars was something else though, especially when they came out of nowhere.

Road Rash 3 had improved graphics but was still the same concept and never got tired of it. I think 3 was the best though, never played the future versions though, don't know if they are any good?

Best sound track I remember had to be the United Kingdom one on Road Rash 3.

OutRun

I never played this much, but I remember it being a bit like Super Hang-on just with a Ferrari and no AI competitors. I remember me struggling to judge where the AI car's were, I was more likely to crash into one when going up hills when you couldn't see and one would come out of nowhere!

As I didn't play it much, I don't remember completing it so I can't recall what the concept was and how you completed it.

I don't know if I could play the 3D remake of OutRun, I always like to stick to the originals, just how I like it.

That's something to start with, anyone remember any other ones, good or bad? I'm sure I had more than I remember!

I never had a Mega Drive as I was a SNES kid, and even then I only owned 2 cartridges for it, Super Mario All Stars and Super Mario World (Both of which i am re-playing through an emulator on my PC.

I came into driving games upon my acquisition of a PS1 and my love for them has never failed since.

I am a big fan of the GTA and Driver series of games and have played and completed all the the games in both series.
The 1st Gran Turismo was awesome my friend and I created our own racing team based on this game and took it in turns to drive, we had so much fun.
I have also been a fan of the Formula1 series of games, and I have owned every one since 98 I seem to remember.
I now own an Xbox360 but I still remember my gaming roots and am building up a collection of emulators so that I can play all my old favorites.

I still have TOCA 2, Driver, Driver 2 and Gran Turismo 2 lying around. I think I may still have GTA London somewhere as well.
I have both GTA and GTA2 on my laptop (which you can get for free from Rockstar).

Anyone else remember Need For Speed: Road Challenge?

Me and my brother had to make do with a C64 and an A500 before we were old enough to buy our own consoles and computers. I remember spending my first pay packet on a new Sony Playstation (well before the ugly PS1), Formula One and Gran Turismo. My brother ended up with an N64 and got way too good at Goldeneye. Those were the days.

But before we could get our own consoles we had games like Super Hang on, Kick Off, Goal!, Frontier (Elite II), APB and Cannon Fodder that we either saved up for or copied from our friends. I don't really remember many of the C64 games we had, I think Daley Thompson's Decathlon, Hunter's Moon and Spy Hunter were amongst them.

Oh yes Driver! Blimey forgot about that one! Wasn't it a bit like a basic GTA concept with doing missions and being able to go into different cars? I know I played the Chicago based one a lot, which was either Driver 1 or 2.

TOCA is another one bought to the front of my mind, yes I adored that especially as it had damages, something I remember being disappointed about in Gran Turismo though I have played all the GT's through the years.

Also, who remembers the incredible Destruction Derby 2! I actually still have this with it's original, but now broken, case. That was so much fun it's a shame they don't make them like that anymore. The music got me into Jug, and I remember the classic quotes 'Wow! What a jump!' 'Woah! You've wrecked your car!' 'Watch it, he's waaaaayyyy out in front!' :D

I remember getting GTA1 when I was still at school, I know, but nothing of the violence ever persuaded me to cause trouble, and it still doesn't now, was much for fun taking it out on AI people/cars/police. I didn't actually buy it, my mum let me rent it for a few times out of Blockbuster's. Who remembers those yellow cases you got, and being rather miffed when there wasn't any behind the game you wanted!!!

There was another violence like game, can't remember if it was rated 18 or not, but was basically driving around in cars with guns, rockets and all sort of ammunition, forget what it was called now :?. I only remember one of the character cars being an Ice Cream Truck with an evil clown face...jog anyone's memory?

Definitely, in fact, I believe GTA makes me less likely to misbehave in real life, as I can take my anger out on the cops and peds of Liberty City ;)

In the original Driver, you couldn't get out of the car you were in.
It was Driver 2 that had Chicago as the first map (along with Havana, Vegas and Rio) and was the first where you could get out of the car, though it was mainly for the ability to change cars and push secret buttons - you didn't have any weapons and couldn't fight people.
As a bit of trivia, Tanner's inability to do anything out of the car in Driver 2 is referenced in a mission in GTA 3.

And the Driver creators responded in Driv3r (Driver3) by putting in characters named Timmy Vermicilli (a take off of Tommy Vercetti the main protagonist in GTA Vice City), Timmy looked similar to Tommy wearing a similar shirt to Tommy's default attire, but Timmy took the wee wee by appearing in a set of armbands referencing the fact that in GTA Vice City Tommy Vercetti couldn't swim.

The page is in Spanish but there are pictures to show what I mean.

Destruction Derby RAW.

Nothing better than crashing into and pushing vague non-copyright infringing copies of cars of buildings!

Me and a mate at school were both addicted to Cannon Fodder! He finished it about 2 months before me, mind.

Even better: he was one of the prizewinners in an Amiga Power competition to design a level for the Cannon Fodder 2, and had a solder in the game named after him. His name appears in the credits under "Additional Map Design", the spawny get!
