Are there still five units (185 x 4 and a single 153) stabled overnight on summer weeknights at Cleethorpes Station?
What year was the approach to Cleethorpes (Suggit's Lane foot crossing) single tracked? I seem to remember having to step over four tracks in the late 1960's/early 1970's.

5 units stable at Cleethorpes every night of the week (1x Northern Rail Class 153 & 4x TPE Class 185's), so, yes.

The stretch of track between Grimsby Town & Cleethorpes was singled between 19th September & 2nd October 1993 (with a passing loop at Pasture Street, between Grimsby Town & Grimsby Docks). It used to be double track throughout, with several sidings out of Cleethorpes which stretched as far as the docks at Grimsby.

Damn, I forgot to check out Pasture Street on my last visit. Not going again until after the clocks go forward - so the return journey to London can be completely or at least mostly in daylight.

On a similiar point, why is it that stock seems to stand well clear of the buffer stops at Cleethorpes? When was the last time the loco realease was used? Someone told me there was a damaged culvert near the buffers which prevented its use. Is this the case?

I don't think this is the case, as loco hauled trains have been right up against the bufferstops in both Platforms 1 & 3 in the past couple of years (not sure about Platform 2). I'm not sure why the units don't go right up to the bufferstops.

When did services from the Lincoln line stop running beyond Grimsby into Cleethorpes. I am always surprised that EMT don't run into Cleethorpes especially in summer. This could be an alternative day out from Nottingham to Skegness.

Actually, the line from Doughty Road bridge to Cleethorpes was singled around 1986, IIRC. The works in 1993 were for remodelling the station, removing the centre road, making P3 a bay platform.

The passing loop is a hangover from the construction of Peaks Parkway Phase 2, IIRC.

At the same time, again in 93/94 the semaphore signalling was removed between West Marsh Jcn and GMB, with all level crossings eventually being passed over to Pasture St - although for a while the old boxes controlled the new barriers which replaced the gates.

As a side note, Friargate box burned down mid-way through the project. I cannot remember what happened with the signalling, but the crossing was controlled locally from the garden shed for a good few months.

Is Cleethorpes Station a safe place to get a kip for five hours on a summer night? Last train in 00:09, first train out 05:18. Would be doing it in May/June for the light early morning but all the cheap b & b's will be full of holidaymakers. I just want to see five trains parked up in Cleethorpes Station with my own eyes.
20:35 out of King's Cross, changing at Doncaster onto that last train in and returning to London on a later afternoon train

Quick note, the units are not actually stabled in Cleethorpes station, but instead trundle into the depot (?!?!?) for a quick clean and topping up with fuel as needed.

And I wouldn't hang around Cleethorpes station of a night time, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, as there is a good few pubs and clubs near by.

The Depot isn't that big and can only hold 2x Class 185's at a time, so the units will have to be in the station at some time, at very least having 3 in the station. Platforms 1 & 2 won't be occupied until the morning, as access to the fuelling point is only available from Platform 3, and the disused Platforms 5 & 6 (although I don't think the Platform 6 road is used at all anymore, Platform 5 certainly is).

As has been said, I wouldn't advise having at night at Cleethorpes station either, as plenty of pubs & night clubs are nearby, and Cleethorpes doesn't have the greatest of reputations!
