Moderators...I apologise if there is already a thread explainging this but I spent some time looking...

In the meantime

Maybe someone "in-the-know" could tell me what the 'P' stands for in the MPC/IPC/IPM fleetnumbers used on the Metrorider/Solos used by Crosville/PMT.....me and a friend have worked out the following:-

M = Minibus
I=Intermediate
S=Single Deck
D=Double Deck

M=Mercedes (chassis)
O=Olympian
A=?
P=?

M=Mercedes (engine)
C=Cummins
G=Gardner
D=DAF

Any help would be appreciated!

Not a Crosville expert but here goes (and you're broadly correct)

First letter was the vehicle type classification
  • C - Coach
  • D - Decker
  • E - Express
  • H - Highbridge decker
  • M - Minibus
  • I - can't recall but suspect you may be right it's Intermediate
  • S - Single deck
  • O - Open top
Second letter was the model type
  • R - RE
  • O - Olympian
  • N - National
  • L - Leopard
  • T - Tiger
  • L - LH later used for Leopard and Lynx
  • V - VR
  • D - Daimler (Fleetline) though later reused for Dart and for Delta
  • M - MW later used for Mercedes and for MAN
  • B - Bova
  • S - SC
Third letter was engine type
  • L - Leyland
  • C - Cummins
  • G - Gardner
  • D - Daf
  • P - Perkins
  • M - Mercedes (though used by CW for MAN)
  • F - Ford
These lists aren't exhaustive. Crosville had the system (continued by Crosville and Crosville Wales) that PMT latterly adopted when they purchased the Chester and Wirral operations.

For all things Crosville try https://www.crosville.org/.

Look under fleet numbering then 'METHOD 4 - A three digit prefix', a long list as letters were reused over the years.
Cheers for that! I'd like to know what the A and P stand for in the PMT ones ideally....I originally thought the P was for OPtare in the IPM fleetnumbers on Metroriders/Solos but then got thrown off with the A in SAD on the Optare Deltas....

The deltas were named SADs for 2 reasons.

1, O already means Olympian so could cause confusion if also used for Optare.

Secondly they didn't want to call them "SODs" as it would cause upset!

Note that in Crosville /PMT, the Optare Deltas were SADs, but Crosville Wales had a pair and they were SDDs

They didn't mind referring to their Olympians's as DOGs however!

When I first encountered Crosville, the main trunk services through Portmadoc (as it was spelt then) were operated by DTO class buses: Double decker, Titan, Oil engine.
