Why does the D stock RAT have added twin headlamps in the same position as the A stock? Is this to do with regulations on the met where they operate?

Since it still uses the original rear lights, do the original headlamps still work?

Regulations and project requirements needed LED headlights.
LU standards dictated the headlights be fitted at a certain height range ARL (Above Rail Level) which was not met by the position of the existing solebar headlights.

The D78 stock would have been the only vehicle with these low level headlights.

It was decided therefore to fit high level headlights rather than fitting the BMAC LED modules to the low level headlight positions.

They're both on the same side because the space is occupied by the drivers knees on the other side.

Nostalgia had no impact on the technical reasons why this decision was made. (Although it was a nice perk!)

If you look carefully you'll also notice the paint and fixing heads where a stiffening bar on the non-driving side of the cab needed to be replaced when the hole was cut for the headlight.

As this is converted from single ender units, rather than a double ender, the space in the non-driving side is available as this would be occupied by the uncoupler switch in the double ended version. Single enders are pneumatic and comms only at the cab ends.

Bulbs were removed and the aperture painted over.
Wiring was also pulled out on one of the "D" DMs.
