Actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has died at the age of 89, her family has said.

A legend of British stage and screen, she won two Oscars during her career - for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and California Suite in 1979.

R.I.P Maggie. One of the last of the old-school greats.

Such sad news. Last year we've lost Michael Gambon, and a year before that Robbie Coltrane.
Many of the cast of the Hogwarts senior staff are no longer with us.

Maggie Smith also died a year to the day after Michael Gambon.

RIP, not many of the older generation left from Harry Potter now.

RIP Maggie.
A very talented actress in a wide range of roles over a long career.
Will be very much missed ...

To add to the list of the older generation who are no longer with us - Alan Rickman.
Although Warwick Davis, Miriam Margoyles and Emma Thompson - and others - are still with us

I loved her in Sister Act. I can't think of many actresses who would be capable of bringing such scene-stealing steel and yet so much kindness and warmth to a role which is so easy to caricature. Much as I think the term is overused, I think it is very much justified in this case: she was a true national treasure. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

A fine actress, but it saddens me that despite a seventy year career, all the media seems to be interested in is her appearance in Harry b****y Potter. That is all most of it talks about, with a vague sentence shoved on the end that she won a couple of Oscars and other awards for stuff that we can’t be bothered to mention.

Sister Act was the first film I associated her with and I loved her in The Lady with the Van. She will be a great loss. RIP

What a life and career. My favourite Dame Maggie role was in A Private Function opposite Michael Palin. She’ll be very much missed. RIP

I found myself noting that she was the same age (89) as my granny when she died nearly 2 years ago when I heard the news on the radio.

A bloody brilliant actress and definitely a major loss. RIP.

Regardless of how you or I personally feel about the Harry Potter franchise (I can take or leave it; I prefer Lord of the Rings myself), Professor McGonagall is the role which she's best known for nowadays aside from Downton and the one most people, at least of my generation/age, were introduced to her growing up. I do concur though that a bit more specificity on her other roles would be appreciated.

It's like Jon Pertwee: had numerous other roles aside from the Third Doctor and Worzel Gummidge, but they're the ones which cemented him in the public consciousness.

Really? I’ve been reading just as much about her work on Downton Abbey.
