I was delayed on a South West train by around 30mins and sought compensation. However their reply:

South West Trains provides Passenger Charter compensation for customers who have experienced delays. I do fully recognise the difficulties that you were caused on your journey with us but I am afraid that we do not provide compensation for customers who have been delayed for less than one hour.

Do they really not compensate less than one hour?

Yes.

http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/compensation.aspx

Anytime, Off Peak, Super Off Peak, Advance and Weekly season tickets

We will compensate you if:

  • Your journey with us was delayed by 60 minutes or more (30 minutes or more on Island Line Trains).
  • The delay to your journey was within our control.

The amount of compensation is:

  • Single tickets: The full cost of a single ticket for your journey on our services.
  • Return tickets: Half the cost of a return ticket for your journey on our services.
  • Weekly season tickets: The full cost of a single ticket (i.e. one-tenth of the price paid) for your journey on our services.

We will not compensate you:

  • If we informed you of a delay or cancellation before you purchased your ticket.
  • If we have published an amended timetable or introduce an emergency timetable. (Any claims for compensation will be based on the amended or emergency timetable.)
  • For delays beyond our control, which includes: security alerts, poor weather conditions, fatality or suicide, or vandalism.
  • Any consequential losses due to a delay or cancellation of our services.
  • If your ticket expired more than 28 days ago.

And I thought 30mins was bad enough. Good thing I don't travel SW often.

Thanks Yorkie!

Question - I was delayed by over an hour last week because of a line side fire between Whitton and Feltham. I have a monthly season ticket. Would I be able to get compensation and how does it work for monthly/yearly season ticket holders ?

If your journey was with South West trains then the information you need is in the link two posts above yours.

The claim would only be successful if the cause of the fire was within the control of the railway industry.

From another thread:-
..... Line side fire between Whitton and Feltham stopped westbound services and we were halted at North Sheen for about 20 minutes. Got home 60 minutes late......
if the fire was on non-railway property, then no compensation is due.

Monthly season tickets are subject to Passenger Charter discounts, not compensation for each journey.

So, in a word, no. No compensation is due on account of this incident alone.

If you follow the link provided by yorkie, you will see that compensation for monthly (or longer) season ticket holders is done completely differently to holders of other tickets.
