Sad news. I remember Des and Mel. R.I.P.

Entertainer Des O'Connor has died at the age of 88, his agent has confirmed.

The comedian, singer and TV host died on Saturday following a fall at his home in Buckinghamshire just over a week ago.

He was known hosting his own chat show, as well as Take Your Pick and Countdown - and for his friendship with Morecambe and Wise.

In a statement his agent said he was "well loved by absolutely everybody" and "loved life".

I didn't realise he was that old.

I remember his chat show in the 1980s/90s when it would descend into chaos when Freddie Starr would appear.

Speaking of Des & Mel - I can't believe the show was last aired in 2006. I don't think he's done much television work since.

RIP

Geordie back from exile.
"If you want me to be a goner, get me an LP by Des O'Connor"

So said Eric Morecambe during one of Des's many appearances on the show. Des was a real showman, not the best singer by his own admission, but a great host and all round nice guy.

RIP Desperate, the world is a less funny place today. :'(

That reminds me of the Morecambe and Wise joke:-

Ernie : Have you got a criminal record?

Eric : Yes, Des O'Connor's Greatest Hits.

Well I thought it was funny anyway. :D

Seriously though it is a sign of age when all the entertainers that you knew from your youth start to pass away.

I wonder how many people under the age of 30 even know who Des O'Connor is.

They don't make entertainers like that any more R.I.P

R I P Des O'Connor

He will always be remembered as the butt of the joke by Morecambe and Wise, but in reality he was very good friends with Eric & Ernie

Didn't Des get married to the pretty young thing that co-presented Take Your Pick with him in the 1990s?

I seem to remember the age gap was huge - something like 35 years. He was actually older than her parents!!!!

Up the creek
My first thought was, “Ah, yes. I remember wet Sunday afternoons (*) watching him on The Golden Shot.” Then I realised that that was Bob Monkhouse: I never could tell them apart.

* - Only wet ones. On dry days there were better things to do.

EDIT: Ianno87, our posts crossed.
