Do Northern/TPE allow staff to have dyed hair?

I'm hoping to start applying for a conductor role with Northern at Wigan, Blackpool or possibly Manchester or with TPE at Preston in the next year or so. I have coloured highlights in my hair (currently purple with my natural colour) will this be allowed if I did get an interview, and would it decrease my chances of getting the job?

A similar question came up relatively recently for Northern, a response was given as follows:
Piercings/tattoos all fine, punk hair cuts and wild colours all fine and within NT grooming standards.

As long as you’ve nothing offensive tattooed that’s visible you’re grand
TPE… I’m not so sure on :)

No problem at all with the hair colour.

Running two anti-Northern twitter accounts (known internally for previously targeting customers tweeting the official handle) might be a bit of an issue though... The link is pretty obvious...

This thread has been locked for a little while, in fear that it would spiral out of control.

I’m going to unlock it in the hope that it can survive the night in a supportive manner for @stan claire who is clearly looking to make a new positive step forward.

It’s right to acknowledge that an applicant being found to have previously ran an anti-railway Social Media account may find it difficult to get a job on the railway, but let’s have a healthy discussion and allow space for @stan claire to ask any further questions they may have.

(To disclaim, I haven’t a clue what the referenced X accounts are. I’m inferring from “and if they went inactive?” that the OP acknowledges these exist and has some control over them.)

I wish the OP well. People getting frustrated by the railway not delivering the service it is intended to, and then becoming interested in the complexities in its operation and consequently wanting to work in the field to, in a small way, help to provide a better service, is nothing new. Just as a sensible hiring manager won’t make an issue about hair colour, piercings or non-offensive tattoos, a sensible hiring manager won’t make an issue (within reason) about people’s past attitudes and actions so long as they can honestly recount their reasons for them and discuss those openly.

I would, however, make one observation. A guard (conductor, train manager, call it what you will) is a very visible role, travelling on a train, often alone, with a great many passengers. If something goes wrong, or if one of those passengers perceives that something goes wrong, no matter how trivial and how distant from your own work, it will be your fault. You’ll have to explain it, and deal with it. Just the same as TOC social media employees who see people posting unpleasant things about their employers, and consequently feel like it’s their fault. You’ll have to reconcile that yourself, and you’ll probably have to reconcile that to any employer as well. In many ways I applaud you for even considering doing that, it’s not something many people have the capacity to do. In very general terms though, I would just be concerned that it’s for the right reasons.

Honestly the corporate world generally has a relatively short memory. This comes with some obvious downsides, and it's not so short that a few months would change much.

However. If there were a hypothetical person who obviously spent several years investing in their CV, say, and really pushed to develop themselves in that time, maybe including changing their attitude to some things and keeping away from any public social media feeds, that could quite easily not be linked back to previous things from several years ago. LinkedIn isn't for everyone, but being on it for several years can have the effect of replacing anything that might be there currently on the first page of Google results under your real name. It's amazing how often recruiters do a Google search of a candidate's name, but only scan the first few results! The more common your first name plus last name combination is, of course, the less easy it will be to make any such link.

I hope that helps!

Lots of people on the forum and indeed twitter and other places are very sensitive to others making any criticism of their employers (I'm not including skyhigh or anyone else who's commented above in that for the avoidance of any possibile doubt), but in reality being privately and maturely critical of them isn't actually a deal breaker at anywhere worth working. It's a real skill to give criticism fairly, or to take criticism well. So many people find those very difficult.

As others have said, most tocs seems to have a relaxed approach to coloured hair now. How ever, it it’s something that you are concerned about, if you was to get a job interview would you not be able to dye your hair a natural colour for the interview and then if you was successful find out the policy on dyed hair?

Or, even keep your hair dyed, then in the interview just mention that you are obviously are aware that your hair is an unnatural colour, ask them the policy at Northern and inform them if you are successful with the interview you’ll be happy to comply with their policy?

Long story short, I was rather immature last year and made a twitter account parodying Northern because I’ve experienced so many issues with reliability in the short amount of time I had been commuting that I thought it’d be funny to take the mick out of it. Nothing against Northern’s staff, just the service in general. I haven’t properly used it in a few months with being on summer break and might just end up setting the account private

Thanks to everyone else for their responses, I’ll start replying after I manage to properly read and think about these

I don’t mean this in a negative way but if you were to join my toc I’d feel a little uncomfortable in your presence and be extremely careful of what I said and did.

I also think if any managers were to be aware of your previous antics then It could make them very wary.

When you put on the uniform you are an ambassador for the company and certainly in front line roles the face of the company.

If you do join a toc I sincerely hope that your previous feelings and actions are most definitely a thing of the past and that there will be no passengers that could recognise you.

Ultimately this is what you make of it. If it was under a pseudonym, then the company might not know but it is increasingly easy to add 2+2 together when it comes to even anonymous social media profiles. Just be careful about it.

This seems like sensible advice.
