Blimey, that brings back memories! I was living in Maidstone at the time, not far from the station in fact. We heard this sorta rumble during the night, & just thought it was a storm, went back to sleep, as you do. Heard the news the next morning on the radio, & me & dad swiftly headed down the station. What a mess! You can only get a basic idea by watching the video, being actually there, you wonder what the hell, etc. etc.

Would it be cynical to suggest that these days, it would take several weeks to get it back to normal? Having spent days deciding who should pay for the crane... then a few weeks erecting safety tape...

Yes, I was reading about an accident in the '70s where over 60 people died. The line was reopened about 30 hours later.
