Advert in today's Evening Chronicle that East Coast are doing the token collect promotion, starting next Tuesday (3rd Jan). The paper is published by Trinity Mirror so it might be in a few others in the NE and Yorkshire (Evening Gazette is normally the other one for Teesside).

Evening Gazette is normally the other paper that does the tokens in the north east area at the same time as the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle. I'll have a look.

I was just wondering if the ticket would only be valid if the journey originated from a station in the North East or could you buy a Kings Cross (KGX) to Newcastle / Durham / Darlington return ticket using the tokens ? If the latter is valid perhaps friends / relatives could send you the tokens which you could redeem at KGX.

You can buy tickets for any journeys on East Coast, though typically 'connections' from other TOCs seem to be excluded.

I made the mistake of thinking that once and booked ticket from Leeds to King's Cross using a set of tokens from Yorkshire Evening Post. So that meant I had to go to Leeds from York (but didn't really matter as I had my season ticket at the time).

In most cases the tokens are not checked, so it would be impossible for a conductor to tell if you had the right tokens for the right area, so to speak.

Helps if you know where to look...

To book or check the price of your journey, simply enter the details of when and where you’d like to travel in the booking engine on the left of this page. Our booking system will then guide you to the best available fares ('EC promotional fare' are the exclusive offers available to you). Remember the Reader Offer is available in First and Standard Class on our off-peak trains for a limited time only, subject to availability.

If you choose to travel First Class you can enjoy all the benefits of our new and upgraded service – these include:

  • A complimentary food and drink service at your seat – with varied and delicious menus.
  • Free on-board Wi-Fi to check your emails and Internet on the go.
  • A new First Class Quiet Coach, where you can relax and unwind in peace.
  • A large, reclining seat with generous legroom, so you can stretch out and enjoy the journey.

When can I book?

Bookings can be made from Tuesday 10 January until midnight 24 January 2012.
You must book at least two weeks in advance of your outward travel date.
Don’t forget – these great prices are only available by using the web address printed in the paper so if you come back later you’ll need to re enter this web address so you can view and book the Reader Offer fares.
If the Reader Offer fare isn’t shown on the journey you’re viewing, there is no availability left at these prices – you can either continue to book onto this train or look for a different time where there is availability.

When can I travel?

  • Between 24 January and 27 March 2012. Excluding 10 – 19 February 2012 inclusive.
  • Seats are available on off-peak services with limited availability on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
  • There will also be limited availability when major events are taking place.
  • Please note: engineering work taking place on some weekends during this promotion may affect your journey times.
  • More information about disruption as a result of engineering work.

What do I need?
  • Please make sure you take your train ticket along with the travel voucher/ correct number of coupons printed in your paper with you on your journey.
  • How do I book?
  • All bookings using this offer must be made online using the booking engine on the left-hand side of this page.
  • You must book at least two weeks in advance of your outward travel date.
  • Seats are subject to availability – we’re expecting the biggest demand at weekends – so please book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
  • All major credit, debit and charge cards are accepted as payment.
  • Once a booking is made no refunds or changes will be allowed.
  • If you require space for a wheelchair or have access requirements, please call our dedicated Assisted Travel Team on 08457 225 225 before you book.
  • To give you a greater choice and more flexibility, tickets are sold as single fares. This allows you to choose the lowest available prices for every stage of your journey. For example, you can select the reader offer fare on the outward journey and, if the return train of your choice is unavailable, you can select the best fares shown.

In addition to the National Rail Conditions of Carriage, the following conditions apply:

  • Your ticket(s) are only valid for the date, East Coast train and reserved seat(s) shown on your ticket(s). You must also take with you the appropriate voucher / coupon(s) for inspection on the train, without which a

  • Bookings must be made at least three weeks in advance of outward travel. Once a booking is made, no refunds or changes will be allowed. There is no child, Railcard, or other promotional discount available with this offer. Under 5s travel free if they do not occupy a seat.

Further to this, I have one set of 6 tokens (which allows a return journey for one person) free to the first person who PMs me. Still some good offers around as I booked some tickets last night with another set.
