Just noticed this article a week ago.

Sheffield council seem to have pretty grand plans for the massive patch of empty land next to the station (Which I agree, is a disgrace that it's empty considering how busy the horrible taxi rank there is).

They want to add a new bus station but most interesting to me, a footbridge over the tracks without the need for a ticket.

This is quite a big deal because if they succeed, I don't think there is any reason why the station cannot have barriers anymore, as if I remember correctly the reason why it does not is because of the fact there is a tram stop directly behind it, which the council did not want being blocked by barriers when EMR took over from EMT.

Will be very interesting indeed to see how this turns out.

"The authority wants to redevelop the huge plot immediately outside the station, build a major ‘cycle and footbridge’ over the tracks to Park Hill and ‘reconfigure’ the ‘under-utilised’ bus station for ‘high quality development’ and homes."

So what will happen to the current bridge that was built with public money, hence why barriers can't be put in?

I wouldn't believe a word Sheffield Council say about that bit of land. I have lived here for just short of 20 years and that bit of land was meant to be all sorts of things.

First it was going to be offices, then something to do with the Uni, then some hotel chain....

I know plans change, but the truth is the land can't be as viable as they are claiming as it would have been snapped up years ago. What was the original plan for the land anyway?

It's an excellent idea. The bus station is now hardly used anyway, would be better integrated more closely with the station as at Barnsley. The current site is at the centre of an area now very different from how it was 18 years ago - new Hallam University buildings, much more going on in the 'Creative Industries Quarter', work starting on the Castle Markets site and of course Park Hill. This is a gaping hole in the middle.

Nothing, rail passengers will continue to use it as they do now. It will be an improvement for rail passengers on the existing bridge as some foot traffic will be removed onto a new bridge, easing congestion on the current bridge.

Allowing ticket barriers to be installed is also a positive move.

The installation of ticket barriers was originally part of the EMT franchise requirements.

There is no public right of way across the existing station bridge. The official alternative bridge has now been out of use for multiple years, it's now a long way around if you want to get from one side to the other, so something needs to be done, even if it's just a rebuild of the existing bridge.

The involvement of public money doesn't imply a right-of-way, and it had nothing to do with the barriers not being put in.

Just thought I'd update this thread with a new development.

London and Continental Railways, a goverment-owned developer used for developing railway land (Bit of a random name though...) purchased the site of a DFS that is next to the station.

The article also has some (albeit slightly outdated) concept art of what it would look like.

I feel like this part of Sheffield could use a lot of work, so even if some of this came to fruition, it would be great to see.

"London and Continental Railways acquired the £5.4m DFS retail warehouse site on St Mary’s Road because it is a five-minute walk from Sheffield Midland station."

The only dfs near Sheffield station is near St Marys Road which isn't near the train station, but about a 5-10 minute walk away on the other side of a main road

Yeah I had a look on Google Maps, clearly not "next to" it, could have been worded slightly better by me

I assume they have plans for that entire area to be redeveloped and there may be more purchases in the future, otherwise I can't really see why they bought the land there as you're right in that it's fairly far away from the station

One possibility (but I highly doubt it) is that the car park and shop (subway has been shut a while) might get pulled down and rebuilt into this alleged building they are meant to be building on the land opposite the train station, with this new purchased land where DFS are as a new car park.

It's the only possible thing I can think of, given that the newly purchased land isn't anywhere near the railway line.

LCR started off as a private company to build and operate what is now HS1, hence the name.

Bit in bold - fixed that for you. That is 2016 concept art of what a post-HS2 Sheffield could look like. Note the dual carriageway South Street which was a proposed diversion of the A61.

Well it is the Sheffield Star and they are always the first for breaking news that happened in 2010. Wait till they catch on to the rumours that they maybe a new arena where the bus station is

I would guess they are buying everything in the area up for a comprehensive redevelopment

There has been a proposal to divert the tram to the front of the station and reinstate the road where it was, which was intended to be a double carriage way in the 50s...
