Note - I am referring to 'eticket' in a very general sense. ie ability to buy a ticket online and store/use on phone (be that in app, barcode, apple wallet etc)

I have found that generally I cannot purchase an eticket from PORTSLADE (Southern). This includes from thameslink, southern, lner, gwr and also 'TrainPal'. According to southern themselves, Portslade does have an eticket reader - and the destinations I've tried include London Bridge, Clapham Junction, Gatwick, Reading etc - with usual offpeak return tickets.

Interestingly 'the trainline' is offering me an eticket option.

Any idea why this might be?

I actually messed up 2 weeks ago - I thought I'd bought an eticket, missed the collection until I tried to get the ticket ready, then had to collect from station at last minute. In a rush I must have not picked up all the tickets (split), I thought I'd waited but perhaps not, and ended up having to buy one segment again (albeit only 8 ukp) :( :( . Ticket office just said already printed/can't do anything :( So etickets are more my thing!

It would appear that some apps/websites are more fussy than others about offering e-tickets. There were explanations from @Paul Kelly and @Haywain. I just use the EMR app for most e-tickets now as they seem to sell all the e-tickets I want, especially on the Brighton Main Line.

Many thanks for the EMR tip. They did indeed sell an e-ticket. Loaded in app and also emailed. No Apple wallet loading or Apple Pay, but I got the tickets I needed. Will likely use them again.

i did tweet southern about why I couldn’t buy from their site. They said they are looking into it….
