Im trying to see how many lines in the UK have only freight traffic running on them where before passenger service used to run on them.

Best e.g I have is Sheffield Victoria - Deepcar :D

Fawley/Marchwood (SR branch from Totton Yard).
Brentford branch (GWR ex-Brentford Dock branch)
Colnbrook branch (GWR ex-Staines West branch)
Part of the former SR Swanage branch, the Poole Docks branch, the Dungeness (ex-New Romney, Kent) branch...

Edge Hill - Bootle (Canada Dock) now only has freight to Seaforth Container Terminal.

Had about 6 stations on the branch.

Line looking at being converted to passenger by MPTE for a potential link to the planned Liverpool FC Stadium at Stanley Park, Anfield.

Current problem is no signalling system.

Id have thought the majority of freight only lines had passenger traffic at some point.

Tondu-Margam must have done ? Stourbridge to Round Oak did, Lichfield to Brownhills did (even if it is now OOU), Filton to Hallen Marsh, Portbury branch, Tytherington Quarry branch, Sharpness branch, Highworth, BMW Cowley, Calvert and Claydon, Kineton, Ashchurch MOD, Coalville, the list is substantial Id have thought.

St Andrews Road - Bristol Parkway/Patchway/Filton, although was used for diversions when Filton was blocked a few years back.

did Burton on Trent-Lichfield ever have passenger traffic?

Yes. There was a station at Alrewas.

Most lines were built to carry both passengers and freight, so the question might be better if it were which freight lines have never carried passenger traffic. To which the answer would include lines into power stations, factories etc.

sinfin branch ( even though latterly it was only a taxi ! )

was there ever a passenger service between Denton Jc and Ashton Moss South Jc ?

I know that Ashton Moss South Jc to OAGB Jc carried the services to/from Oldham Clegg St until about 1958 when it was withdrawn.

One obvious one I can think of is Crewe-Northwhich via Sandbach and Middlewich. There is a re-opening campaign, but not much seems to be happening. Another one is New Mills to Northenden Junction on the Mid Cheshire line - Cheadle Heath station was on that line. Baguely was just after it on the still used Mid Cheshire, and there is a campaign to re-open that station and stop the currently non-stop passenger trains that run through. It serves a huge area (Baguely and Wythenshawe) and wouldn't cost much - just a couple of modular platforms. Issue is the single-track nature of the line I think.

The line to what was Morris Cowley used to run through and meet the Thame branch..done both bits it seems on a tour! The freight-only Abingdon branch must have closed but was once a passenger line.

Thame branch went long ago, early 90s I think after the oil depot closed, now a SUSTRANS. Abingdon branch was lifted in the 80s.

Blyth and Tyne an obvious one for up here, also possibly the branch from Saltburn to Skinningrove.

An historic one would be the Riverside Route in Newcastle via Byker, St. Peter's, St. Anthony's and Walker, which had its stations closed then the oine was closed fully when freight to the scrap yard at St. Peter's was stopped.

The Beddau branch in South Wales leaves the SWML at Pontyclun, and had stations at Cross Inn near Llantrisant and other locations en-route to Llantwit.

Offhand, these ex-passenger freight only lines are getting rarer in Wales: the Vale of Glanmorgan and Ebbw Vale lines have been restored to passenger service, the Beddau branch is a target of SEWTA to serve Llantrisant-Cardiff, and the Amlwch branch is also under consideration.

There are certainly signals on it!

But to run a passenger service on it, especially Merseyrails high-intensity style service, the line would need major re-signalling to reduce the headways and provide home signals. Bootle junction would likely need re-building for higher usage and mothballed platforms at Oriel Road and the Strand would need to be brought into use again.
