At long last Trenitalia have come up with a good value nationwide rover ticket for foreigners. The above-named pass is now available in various categories and is effectively a multi-trip pass for different numbers of days, different classes of travel and different age groups of passengers. As with most things Italian, it's quite complicated and it's worth bearing in mind that it's NOT valid on regional trains, being obviously targeted at tourists travelling between major centres....so no use for bashing obscure branch lines, I'm afraid. It is valid on all Freccia services, Intercity, Intercity Night services and Italy-Switzerland Eurocity services for journeys wholly within Italy. Seat/sleeper/couchette reservations are mandatory....but free of charge and the pass has to be activated within eleven months from the date of purchase.

Passes can be purchased for 3 journeys within 7 consecutive days, 4 journeys within 7 consecutive days, 7 journeys within 15 consecutive days or 10 journeys within 30 consecutive days. In case of journeys involving connecting train services, each leg of the journey will count as a separate journey (e.g. Torino-Napoli with a change in Milano will be two journeys). However a Frecciarossa journey from Roma to Matera (for example) - changing onto the 'Freccialink' connecting coach service at Napoli or Salerno - will count as one journey.

The three different passenger age categories are Adult (28-59 years old at time of purchase), Youth (12-27 years old at time of purchase) and Senior (60+ years old at time of purchase)

The three different comfort categories are Easy (valid in second class seats and couchettes only), Comfort (valid in First/Business class seats, T2 & T3WL sleepers, plus the lower categories if no appropriate places free) and Executive (valid in Executive class on Frecciarossa services, first class only on Intercity services and all couchettes and sleepers except for Excelsior class). All three categories are valid on 'Freccialink' connecting luxury coach services as part of a through journey.

Prices start from 129 Euro and go up to 594 Euro. For full details in English, go to www.trenitalia.com

This has been around for a couple of years, but they haven't been the most travel friendly years.

Indeed.....but it's now being advertised prominently on the Trenitalia website. I rather had the impression that they didn't want many foreigners travelling around during Covid.

Od be interested to read anyone's experience with this. In addition to your main journeys it also covers "frecce link" journeys, which I presume are local connections onto mainline services, but I couldn't find any definition for exactly what is or isn't a frecce link.

'Freccialink' coach services operate from major hubs to important business, political or tourist centres which either don't have a rail connection, or only have a very slow and roundabout service. They cannot be used as a 'point-to-point' service, but only as an add-on to a 'Freccia' high-speed rail journey. The two most well-known and well-used services are probably those between Florence & Siena and Napoli/Salerno & Potenza/Matera in the South.

EDIT: Checking the latest info on the website, it would appear that the Florence-Siena 'Freccialink' service is no longer running, having been replaced by the new Florence-Perugia-Assisi route.

Of course the main issue with these is the price vs Interrail.

4 trip in 7 days Trenitalia pass is €157
4 day in 1 month Interrail is €153

Of course there are several fundamental differences
Interrail is valid for unlimited travel within validity, FS is 4 trips. A trip can include more than one train but not for example a return journey.
Seat reservations are free with FS but €10 Frecce, €3 IC per train with IR
Local/regional trains are included with IR, Not with FS.

For the minor line bashers: since also quite a few yrs there is a pass for 3-5 days (from memory-check again) for only the Regionale (and RE) trains, which is quite cheap. Combine the 2, if not willing to Interrail it, for fuller cover. Note however that for R-trains/treni there are always obscure and hard to understand exclusions or special rulings for TreNord and TPER (merged operations of TrenItalia and local railways in Lombardia=Nord and Emilia-Romagna=ER). Several regions, notably Umbria, Lombardia, Lazio and Campania also offer their own all-transport rover tickets.
The offer described in this post is very similar to what RENFE offers as Spain RailPass-also for a certain nr of hi-speed/long-distance routes, except that Spain does not offer any overnight anymore and this ´pass´ is completely online only-no paper at all. You should also be able to make the needed reservations only with the pass-nr.
For those thinking of InterRail: it is since this year possible to make reservations for Frecce/IC etc. again via a kind of sneeky bypass on oebb.at. In the past this was possible and easy to do at TrenIt-machines, but this is withdrawn, nor is it possible to do reserv. only via trenitalia for other passes as the one here.

I think the best value comes if you are using night trains, where couchette or sleeper supplements are also included

If your primary residence is in the UK and your Italian home is registered as a 'seconda casa', then I would say yes.

Ahh nice, no use to me though as my local station is only served by two Intercity trains a day and regional trains every hour or so

If you don't mind me asking, which is your local station....Caserta or somewhere else? Maybe you could use the pass to get to it from the French or Swiss frontier?

I have two:

Vairano-Caianello, on the Naples-Rome via Cassino railway line

Dragoni, on the Naples-Piedimonte Matese railway line
