HALLO,

I am considering doing the steam train from London to Exeter at the end of October. I presume it drops off only at St. David's Station only in Exeter and if there is not really enough time to go to Central and the City Centre, does anyone know of any decent pubs / eating places still doing good food after 1400 hrs approx, near St. David's? I know there is the Imperial, but don't have much knowledge of that part of Exeter.

That steam tour looks an interesting sroute & locos.

Tks & Rgds.

Although you haven't specified what charter you're traveling on, I'm assuming that it won't go to Exeter Central because it would need a banking locomotive to get up the 1 in 38 gradient to that station. Additionally there aren't any run-round facilities there.

As I'm a student in Exeter, I know the city's pubs pretty well. On the other side of the station car park is the Great Western Hotel which has a good bar and restaurant, which should be open all day.

Across the road are the Jolly Porter and Seamus O'Donnells, although the latter pub has now closed apparently.

The Imperial up the hill serves cheap meals all day, and the ale selection isn't too bad either. Plus the beer's cheaper than most places in Exeter, being a Wetherspoons pub.

Hope this helps/

Many tks for the Pub info, they look good, I'll check them out and I think you are correct in assuming the steam charter won't be calling at Exeter Central....(I think there was a problem there a few years back on a similar trip when the loco and train could not get up to Central from St. Davids!)

Rgds.
