shame they don't do a railcard for general use by someone of any age. I intend travelling more on the railways for trips now than ever before. I can only benefit from a saving using the F & F but i then must have my son travelling also and since i only see him weekends i pay full price for weekday solo outings

Would be no point in having a railcard for everyone, would be easier just to reduce certain fares by 33%.

my railcard cost €225 for a year and entitles me to 50% off full fare tickets within germany and 25% off the external part of cross border full fare tickets.

It would have some benefits:
- Promote purchasing before boarding at staffed stations
- Discount the cost for regular passengers
- Minimum fare after 10am would result in further shift to off peak services
- The price for the Railcard could be fairly high but could be reduced for people who can prove they are a certain age (e.g. 16-25, over 60 etc)
- Common conditions for everyone (e.g. you're better off with a Senior railcard at 8am in the North, but you're better off with a 16-25 at 8am in the South East. Why?)

Aye. After all, for a very large chunk of the British population, for the majority of their leisure travel, there IS a generally available railcard- the Network Railcard. The area that covers is pretty big, but the population it covers is massive- even if the boundaries are somewhat baffling (Kings Lynn is in, but Peterborough and Norwich aren't, for example).

However, it is pretty poorly promoted, compared to the other railcards.

I notice FGW do some smaller area railcards too- one for the Cotswold line (that borders the Network RC), available to all and one for Devon and Cornwall, available to residents only.

Those who do the most peak time travel, and form a very large section of the rail-using public, already receive a fairly large discount when they purchase their season ticket.

You could probably be covered for your whole life on some sort of railcard:

0-5 - Free Travel
5-15 - Family Railcard
16-25ish - YP
25-60? - Family Railcard
60+ Senior.

Of course would mean you'd have to have a family to travel with a lot...
