Family & Friends Railcard Query

Hello all, just looking for some money saving advice.

I've got a Family & Friends Railcard, with both my wife and I's names on so we can use it together or separately, as long as our 6 year old is with us. On Good Friday, we're all going to my parents together and then I'm going off to Wales on Easter Monday to watch a football match and my wife and 6 year old are travelling home together.

I already have my tickets to Wales and back, which are full price as I'm on my own. However, for the journey to and from my parents, I would ideally like to buy returns for my wife and child and a single for me. One way is significantly cheaper as there's a big hike for a period return.

If I got myself a single on the family railcard, would it be valid? Is there any way to buy such a ticket or would I need to purchase another child ticket as well, despite only having one child?

From the internal knowledgebase,

Discounted price tickets purchased by a Family & Friends Railcard holder should be issued for travel for the same origin and destination and should normally be of the same ticket type (example all Off-Peak Returns). However, the Railcard group can be extended either on the outward or return journey, up to the maximum group size detailed above. If the group size is increased for a complete return journey then discounted price tickets of the same type can be either purchased in advance of travel or at the ticket office before the journey commences.

If the group size is increased for only the outward or return leg of a journey, then appropriate discounted single tickets should be issued for the new members of the group. It is in this situation that the ticket type may vary.

From the internal knowledgebase,
Thank you! That reads like it is valid. But I may have some trouble explaining it to a ticket office clerk, especially as I'll be splitting.

I'll have a play around online now I know that it's valid and if I can't buy them, will wander down to the ticket office tomorrow.
