Farringdon to Portsmouth & Southsea

The route is possible: Farringdon to Portsmouth & Southsea, with one change at Three Bridges. The first leg is by Thameslink, the second Southern.

However, it is not possible to buy a ticket for this route from Farringdon - it must be purchased one station along the route, at Blackfriars, even though it is the same train that departs from Farringdon.

Farringdon is not considered a London Terminal, whereas Blackfriars is - so the ticket is labelled "London Terminals to Portsmouth..."

My question is, how can this route be done ? presumably one would have to buy a paper ticket from Farringdon to Blackfriars, and at the same time a ticket from London Terminals (ie. Blackfriars) to Portsmouth.

Does anybody have any advice ? The attraction of starting the journey at Farringdon is that it links in with the Elizabeth line. In an ideal world, one would use contactless to travel say from TCR to Farringdon, then transfer onto a Thameslink train at Farringdon for the onward journey, changing at Three Bridges.

Much appreciated in advance !

It is entirely possible to buy a ticket for this but it won't be a ticket from London Terminals to Portsmouth. Where are you trying to buy the ticket?

A ticket from Zone U1 London to Portsmouth Stations would be valid, as effectively would one from the north side of London with a Maltese Cross for Cross London transfer.

Alternatively, split somewhere on the Brighton Line (eg Gatwick Airport) with a ticket from London Thameslink to that station, then a separate ticket from there to Portsmouth.

Our ticketing site will issue a ticket for this journey.

The origin in this case would be "London Underground Zone 1" (aka "Zone U1 London").

A friend of mine has done this several times, wanting to travel between Portsmouth and St Pancras International (for the Eurostar) without using the Underground. She bought a ticket to London Terminals and a separate ticket from City Thameslink (the northernmost ‘London Terminal’ when coming from the south) to St Pancras.

Our site will sell such a combination if it's cheaper, but it's highly unlikely to be.

Thank you so much, that's amazingly helpful!

Another great and useful route - this should be one of the benefits of Thameslink for the south coast cities - travelling through London without using the underground.

I was trying to buy it from Farringdon. I travelled on the Elizabeth Line using my Oyster card, tapped out at Farringdon, and tried to buy the rail ticket from the machine at Farringdon.

I believe it is possible to buy a ticket from London Thameslink to Portsmouth which would be valid from Farringdon

If travelling via Three Bridges, yes.

Again, our site will offer that fare too, where appropriate.
