This job in Cheltenham has come up - what does a chargeman actually do?

I think it's an old Wessex Trains grade, hence why it's called what it's called. It's basically the FGW modern day equivalent of a Service Delivery Supervisor, or more generically the platform supervisor.

So essentially responsible for the platform area it's staff outlay.

I do a job formerly known as Chargeman - it involves train dispatch, directing platform assistants/cleaners (who following rationalisation, are actually the same grade - you just work on rotation as person in charge/platform assistant), being a security/fire warden for the platforms, keeping an eye on the platform buildings and their upkeep, making sure contractors work safely, platform work (shunting units, communicating with the signaller etc) and other general duties. I report to the duty station supervisor. I think it was originally grade RO2(S) or similar in the BR grade structure, although following the removal of this grade structure things have moved in or out of the role.

I'd be surprised if it was much different, although I suppose it could involve more personal training and development stuff.
