Hiya,

I will be travelling to Penzance tomorrow, but I've got a change at Plymouth for about half an hour - what kind of food can you get in and around the station? Is there something like a McDonalds or a Burger King on the concourse?

Thanks in advance,

David

I was in Plymouth for a conference last September, I don't remember anything being by the station, I seem to remember it was a way away from the centre. There was a Spar on the station and I can't remember what else.

Catering in and around Plymouth station is relatively limited from what I can remember, and the walk to the town centre is a fair distance, perhaps 10 minutes each way?

There is a Spar, a brisk walk will get you into the city within 5 minutes and there is a Subway not too far away or Burger King in Drake Circus however that would be mega pushing it within 30 mins.

There is no mc'donalds, burger king, etc at Plymouth. You could visit the station buffet if your rich, or head out the station, turn right (past the taxi's)left at end of road (up the bank) under the subways and into the town centre. Once you are cear of the roundabout its either the 1st or 2nd left there is a Burger king on that street. You'll find something around there i expect.

Be best to take it back to the station though as by the time you walk to the town centre following my directions your looking at 10 mins there 10 back if your quick ! So don't dilly dally around just go to the first place you find.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info - if we're on time I might chance it and run into town, depending on what the others I'm with think.

On a side note, what are CrossCountry and FGW like at food from their buffet - I'm on HSTs on both (if that makes a difference)?

Cross Country have no catering in Cornwall, and apart from that all you can expect is a rather feeble trolley service. First Great Western should have a limited buffet on offer, probably including cold sandwiches and perhaps burgers (if there are any left), plus the usual cakes/pastries etc.

The exit from the station is on the south side, but if you fancy taking a short walk over the tracks, there are a couple of exceptionally good "convenience stores" on Dale Road, and to get there, you get to cross over the eastern approach to the station by going over the tracks on Sutherland Road with a truly excellent view of the stock in the station and the fairly constant movements through it. Easy to get there and back in 15 mins.
Actually, you will have time to get just about anything you like to eat on Muley Plain which is a little further in the same direction, but if you don't feel confident then p'haps you shouldn't!

So, turn left out of the station and down Glen Park Ave., parallel to the track then left over the bridge and straight on.
The shops are on Dale Road which is the second road you'll reach and it runs parallel to the tracks (don't be confused by the fork in the road after the bridge, left is quickest but either will do).

If you wait until Penzance, there's a rather nice cafe just outside the station (by the bus station). Just literally 1 min across the road.

At Plymouth station, there is a Pumpkin cafe shop which does serve nice baked potatoes and it isn't too expensive. Apart from that, as others have already said, it is a walk to the centre which is an atrocious dump (I lived there for years)
