My son is bus mad (as well as trains and aeroplanes!)
We're flying from gatwick on Friday but have the afternoon and night before at Gatwick itself stopping at the Hilton, South Terminal.

I was wondering if there is any free buses to car parks etc we might be able to take a trip on with him?

I do believe there are free shuttle buses. (or there was when I flew from there last year) from what I remember though it is quite a short journey... although it might have just felt like that after my flight!!.

what about the station there as well if he likes trains?. I believe it is barriers but im sure a little word with whoever is on and you could have a look

You can use Metrobus local services for free between Gatwick North and South Terminals, Fastway routes 10 and 100, at peak times some 200 and the 300 as well.

Route 10 is formed by 14 reg Volvo single deckers
Route 100 is formed by 08 reg Scania Omnicitys and 13 or 66 reg Wright Streetlites, but can throw out other buses sometimes.

A day ticket for all buses around Crawley, Gatwick and Horley on Metrobus is £4.20 on their app for an adult, £4.90 on the bus, child fares roughly half that. You could always explore the Crawley bus network for a little while.

The long term car park shuttles can take quite a while to do a full circuit depending on which areas of the car park are requested. There is a separate one for the North and South Terminals. I think, however, that they usually layover in the car park for some time before going back to the terminal so they might kick you off. But if that's the case you can always get off at the free pickup car park and go back from there.

Thank you for that, will have a ride on the long stay car park bus at Gatwick to the free pick-up area in the future.
What about other airports around the UK? Does anyone have any tips for interesting bus/train journeys to the local car parks or between terminals where I can travel (for free?) without causing trouble?

London Heathrow - free travel on Heathrow Express/Connect between the terminals.
Also free travel on London Underground between the terminals, but you must use an Oyster card or contactless bank card to touch in and out at the barriers.

Free travel on scheduled local buses within the airport area.

Birmingham - free shuttle train between Birmingham International railway station and the airport terminal.

Not an airport but if you're ever in Bristol, there's currently a offer where you can travel on Route 625 for free ten times. Simply pick up a leaflet at Bristol Parkway (where the route goes past) and fill out the attached vouchers.
