I don't believe that this has been posted before. It may well be of use to train enthusiasts holidaying in Spain.

This scheme started in 2022 and has been extended repeat efly. It may be extended further after April 2024.

All Cercanías (commuter train), Rodalies (commuter routes in Catalonia) and Media Distancia routes (mid-distance regional lines, covering journeys of less than 300km) run by the national rail operator Renfe will be free of charge from 1 January 2024 to 30 April 2024.

The pass can be bought on Renfe apps, at tickets offices or at the ticket machines.

At the ticket machines, you choose the option for Abono Recurrente (and probably best to choose the furthest stop) to buy the ticket pass. Possibly €0.50 will be added to the price for the reusable card which may be paper or plastic. The can be later reloaded with other tickets.

The machine will ask for a passport/ID number and a telephone number. Apparently any random 9 digits for a telephone number will be accepted.

The website says that to purchase the pass you must register in advance at renfe.com or in the Renfe and Renfe Cercanías Apps. I'm not sure if it's required if buying from ticket office or the machine.

Then the card has to be validated ( touched in and out), also, to record the journey.

Please note a refundable deposit of 10 euros, regardless of the origin and destination of the route traveled within the Cercanías hub.

In the case of Media Distancia services, the refundable deposit is 20 euros.

To guarantee free travel for frequent travelers, the amount will be refunded when at least 16 trips are made in that four-month period. This refund will be made at the end of the validity period. In the case of payment by card, the refund will be made automatically through the same means.

I thought the scheme required you to nominate a specific local/MD route for the free offer.
It isn't a generic free pass on those services across Spain.
Or have I misunderstood?

It's definitely the first one (unless they have changed it recently)

It's not.

I purchased a Cercanias Abono Recurrente for €10 at a Malaga Airport station TVM late last year.

According to a local paper when we were in Cadiz last year, people have been booking 16 trips to get one free return. This has caused some MD services to Sevilla to "sell out" when they actually run almost empty.
