I have been researching this a little and can’t find a current view on this question.

My Mum, who has a Freedom pass wants to travel, after 9.30am on some weekdays from West Hampstead Thameslink St Albans.
Can she use her freedom pass and buy a Boundary 6 ticket at the West Hampstead ticket office? What would be the cost of this?
I can see that an off peak day return from Elstree to St Albans is £9.60 and a return from West Hampstead is £13.60. So would the Boundary 6 ticket be £9.60 return?
Is this the cheapest way to do this journey or should she get a Senior Railcard instead? Or is there any other way?
Thanks in advance

You can get a senior railcard from 60th birthday (strictly can apply just before)

If it is worth it depends on how often she travels outside her Freedom pass area. They cost £30 (year) or £70 3 years). Need the ticket savings to be more than cost to be worthwhile.

If she has a Freedom pass, (not the 60-66 version), then cheapest would be to take the bus, no idea how practical or how many changes, but cost would be zero. Freedom pass acts as an English National scheme pass

601 from Borehamwood. No change needed.

Seems a shame to get off a train that would get her into St Albans in 7 minutes, then wait for a slow bus. But it might be worth it if the final destination in St Albans is in on the bus route, but distant from SAC.

To get back on track either a Boundary Zone 6 to St Albans or Elstree & Borehamwood to St Albans Off Peak Day Return will suffice. Both cost £9.60.

There is no need for the train to call at Elstree & Borehamwood, whichever ticket is used.

Just a couple of longish train journeys would effectively pay for that Senior Railcard. After that every use of it is a bonus, including getting savings on that journey from Boundary Zone 6 to St. Albans
