It took 55 minutes by walk from the Fazakerley to Aintree ASTA Superstore (near Old Roan station).
What is the optimal way to get there by train?

In addition, where can I find any direct bus from near Fazakerley to Aintree ASTA Superstore?

Thanks!

ASTA? Do you mean Asda?

Google maps suggests 35 minutes walk (at a slow pace), so it is likely to be under 30 minutes if you walk at a reasonable pace.

To use the train you change at Kirkdale, but I think during the day (Mon - Sat) you just miss a connection heading towards Aintree / Old Roan, making your journey about 26 minutes, so you might as well walk.

Return journey towards Fazakerley takes 16 minutes, but you only have 3 minutes to change at Kirkdale. If you miss your connection, the next train is 15 minutes later.

Google Maps can say anything they want, I walked very fast (it was cold) and could not be faster that 55 min (if I run only).

I don't afraid of waiting, I just tired of this long trip under windy and cold conditions.

How much it would cost if I change at Kirkdale?

Fazakerley to Old Roan is £3.05 single, £3.35 return.

If making multiple trips in one day, an Area C Day Saver at £3.70 would be better value, or for 20p more, an Area C Saveaway includes all modes including buses. More info here and here. Area C includes city centre.

Sorry can't offer you help on bus routes. Someone more local may be able to do so.

Google Maps has bus data for the area, so why not try planning a public transport journey on there? Or you might do well to walk from Fazakerley to Aintree or Orrell Park to take a train to the Old Roan from there if you want to shorten it slightly.

From a very quick look bus 159 appears to do it in 8 minutes from the Hospital twice an hour at least. There are other options so a Google journey plan is probably your best bet.

Is cycling an option?

I thought about cycling yes, but I want a small one convertible which I can only buy in Liverpool itself.

I'll check about this bus immediately!! many thanks!!

There is grey striped path on the google calculated route - I think because of this path the estimated time is only 35 min but actually it is not less than 55 min.

Thanks for the rates!

why not just order your shopping on line and have Asda bring it to you? It would be cheaper than the trian fare

15 minutes to Old Roan station when I looked just now, then a few minutes walk to ASDA.

By train, Rice Lane to Walton is about 300m, and walking between the two means making instead of missing a connection IIRC.

But the problem with that is that if they don't have something in stock they might substitute it or just not put it in. Then your meal might not be possible. At least if you're there then you can choose to change your meal. Both have been known to happen.

I never really understood why Rice Lane exists and wasn't just platforms on the Kirkby lines at Walton.

Certainly, but you can usually solve that with a trip to a local shop. Though it doesn't help the OP as he wants a bank!

Could you believe I failed to find the 159 bus stop in the Aintree Hospital! Looked at this map but still did not find it, to be sure I waited 10 minutes outside of the ECU - the only bus I saw was bus 17.

UPD Can I delete this reply? did not find that option.
Any way google has solved this issue in an amazing manner -

If you mean Fazakerley Hospital, walk north to Longmoor Lane. Catch 20/21 (frequent) bus towards Liverpool (passing Fazakerley Station). Alight at Black Bull Inn. Cross round and catch northbound 300, 310 or 345 bus (about 6 per hour during daytime) - these all go past Old Roan, passing all the shops on Ormskirk Road.

Bus 159 runs every 30 mins at weekday daytimes only, and leaves you with several minutes walk from Old Roan to the shops.
