Hi

How long should I leave when changing trains from the above stations? Would 30minutes* be enough?

*By this i mean the train arriving at say 11am, and a train leaving QS at 1130

NationalRail gives a walking time of 5 minutes according to thier online journey planner.

I typed in Glasgow Central-Glasgow Queen Street.

It also suggested going out to Partick I think walking is the better option! :)

30 mins is what I would recommend for someone who doesn't know the city. Locals and people who know where they're going could probably do it quicker.

30 minutes is the official transfer time, so I would advise that you leave at least 30 minutes regardless.

If you're lazy or don't want to try and navigate through the crazy people on Buchanan Street, there's the 398 bus that runs from Gordon Street (the main entrance to Central) to the North Hanover Street (side) entrance to Queen Street. It's free if you've got a ticket.

It's an easy 10 minute walk for most people. Otherwise use the free bus.

Directions on foot (it is signposted): with the platforms behind you, walk ahead and exit Central Station by the main booking office. Turn right, and walk ahead across two junctions until you reach the pedestrianised Buchanan Street, where Borders will be directly in front of you. Turn left, and walk ahead up Buchanan Street, across one street, past the Apple Store to the next junction. The Tron (?) Church is on your left. Turn right, and Queen Street station is just ahead on your left.

Concur with the above directions. It's very simple. But watch out for the idiots (Big Issue sellers, charity workers, No2ID petitions, the occasional CND march...) blocking your way at Buchanan street.

Apparently it takes have as long just to change platforms at Central - the minimum interchange time is 15 mins.

This means that for some journeys where a nice and easy 14 minute connection can be made at Central, journey planners may force you to walk to the rather less illustrious Queen Street to make a train from there! e.g. Carmyle to Edinburgh, it suggests walking from Central (arr 1736) to Queen St (dep 1815), instead of getting the 1750 NXEC service. If it's going to take someone 15 mins to change platforms at Central then it's going to take such a slow person a lot more time to get to Queen St! Especially with luggage... And on the 1750 you'd probably get a seat, I bet on the 1815 you'd be wedged in to a poxy DMU like sardines.

Nahh, the 1815 isn't sardines. You get a seat on it every time.

During the planning of my recent ALR I allowed 30 minutes between Central and Queen Street
I also had a few connections between the 16:30 Euston - Glasgow / 20:48 Glasgow - Edinburgh
This is LESS than the recommended 15 minutes, and even with the Euston service running 10 minutes late is still possible!

There are numerous ways of walking between Central and Queen Street (due to the gridiron)
However if you walk out of the main Gordon Street entrance at Central or Woodside Way at Queen Street there are signs on the route!

Another trick I use is to view a route on google "person view"
