There are quite a few Grade 2 listed signalboxes found around Lancashire. Parbold Cabin is probably my fave; lovely little box that does a really important job in the sleepy village of Parbold.
Do the railway authorities have to get permission if they want to knock one of these boxes down? I don't know the situation with listings status. I do know that you can't knock down a Grade 1 listed building unless you get a court order. Anybody know of any grade 1 listed boxes????

Epsom's distinctive elevated signalbox was listed, I think Grade 2, it had the roof repaired in 1989 but was closed in 1990 and ripped down without any prior warning in early 1992.

I love the Midland Railway style signal boxes and hopefully they will be around for a while irrespective of whether they are listed or not. The one at Garsdale is my personal favourite thanks to its location and its importance to the S & C (especially in terms of days gone by). Its sad to think how many have gone on that line.

Rhyl No. 2 signal box is listed, but I'm not sure whether it's grade 1 or 2.
It's now closed, but they've not been allowed to demolish it, so it still stands - a magnificent ex-LNWR structure - at the west end of the up platform.

Wylam is, and possibly Hexham. Fantastic examples of a design that is very rare these days.

Also, probably not quite what you imagine, but the concrete box at New Street Station is also Grade II listed

There are hundreds of listed signal boxes: http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/search?q=signal+box.

(I like that website, as you can probably tell. It's a great resource for finding out about random old buildings when I'm out and about on walks in the country)

It used to be standard practice on BR that if a structure was listed and they wanted to get rid of they would let it decay until it was classed as "a dangerous structure" in which case they could demolish it.
That said , Listing a brick or stone signalbox is a pointless exercise since they don't lend themselves to conversion to any other use. Castleford and Castleford Gates boxes are listed even though they have no interesting features and they have been rotting away for something like 15 or more years now.Same with Howden.

It's not just BR, many owners of listed buildings do the same. Often the local criminals come into use, both by vandalising and ideally setting fire to it, although it's questionable there if it's sometimes an inside job. The old hospital in town is listed but sitting out of use as the developers want to knock it down but can't because it's listed. Keep waiting for the fire.

I think Wroxham signal box is listed, as when the Sherringham line was resignalled it was retained (as was Cromer) despite posing a sighting problem on the station starting signal which protects the single line. It decayed and would probably have gone, but the Bure Valley Railway got the money to move it back a few feet onto their land.

there, grade 2, and Cromer http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-480344-signal-box-at-former-beach-station-crome plus the signals http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-480345-semaphore-signals-at-former-beach-statio presumably due to being the last M&GN box in use.

And quite right too. Birmingham New Street PSB is one of the most impressive of all the 1960s Power Signal Boxes. The panels and their capabilities are still incredible.
