If four people travel out together but less than that return is a groupsave still valid (i.e. if only three, two or one make the return journey)?

No, you will need to excess to the full price before travel or buy a new ticket.

That said, if a group of 2 or 3 presents all 4 groupsave tickets, most guards will not have a problem. Ask before boarding if at all possible.

With most group tickets, there is normally one ticket valid for "up to" the number of people in the maximum group size. GroupSave seems to be different, for reasons I'm unsure of.
It does seem to create the absurd possibility that if one person falls ill before or during the trip, the remaining passengers can be seen to be liable to pay an excess fare. I am sure most guards would accept it if all 4 tickets are presented, though.

Yes, I wouldn't have an issue if all tickets are present but other than this an excess is the least you can expect, it's treated the same as 'no railcard present' and should really be new tickets all round.
On a related issue, when I bought advance tickets from Yorkshire to London recently East Coast's "Small Group" discount was added. However I didn't see anything that said that this had been added until I got the tickets. I was then worried as one of our party may not have been able to make it (but we thought the risk of paying £13 each way and not using it was better than having to pay full fare on the day...). We'd probably have been ok as there were still at least 3 of us (and our tickets weren't checked on the way down anyway) but I did wonder what would have happened if fewer than 3 of us had travelled.
I wouldn't worry with the EC small group discount - it's a discount for buying in bulk, as you say it's applied automatically. All that happens is you get a slightly bigger discount off the ticket price. There's no requirement to be together as a group, and you could reserve each person in a separate coach if you wanted!
Not if they had to get through any barriers.
I've had multiple people included on the old airline-style tickets but they don't go through the barriers anyway.
