On BBC News this morning GTR have announced ex London Midland CEO Patrick Verwer is their new CEO. Given the issues they had during his tenure Govia haven't exactly thought outside the box to get in a real troubleshooter. Probably just rang around a few people in their phone book!

Beleaguered rail firm Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has appointed a new chief executive.

GTR, which runs Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern, said Patrick Viewer would take up the post in July.

Mr Viewer was in charge of London Midland Trains when it lost the franchise for West Midlands routes.

It had been forced to pay out £7m in compensation after 800 services were delayed or cancelled in 2012 because of a shortage of drivers.

London Midland Trains lost the franchise for routes in the West Midlands, as well as from London Euston to Crewe, and Liverpool to Birmingham in December 2017.

At one point during London Midland's tenure the 16:46 from London Euston to Crewe was then the most overcrowded rail service in England and Wales, with more people standing up than sitting down, according to Department for Transport figures.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash, who described GTR as a "rotten franchise", has yet to comment on Mr Viewer's appointment.

GTR Passengers have faced major disruption as hundreds of trains were cancelled following the introduction of new timetables in May.

About 230 daily services were removed from GTR's routes to make for a "more consistent timetable", the company said.

Charles Horton, announcing his resignation as GTR chief executive on Friday, said it was "the right time to hand over the leadership" of GTR.

He had rejected claims the company did not have enough drivers to work the new timetable, saying: "We have sufficient drivers, but where drivers are available to run these services is mismatched."

David Brown, chief executive of Go-Ahead, GTR's parent company, said: "I have full confidence in Patrick's ability and determination to lead GTR and its team through the current difficulties and to deliver the long-term benefits of the new timetable."

He is Dutch and worked for NS before becoming MD of Merseyrail (Abellio/Serco) for 10 years.
He then moved to Govia to run London Midland for 5 years.
As experienced as they come.

Patrick Verwer was Managing Director of London Midland between January 2012 and December 2017. Before that he worked in the transport industry in the UK and Europe, specialising in rail and airport services. He first came to the UK in 2003 as Managing Director of Merseyrail. Born and educated in the Netherlands, Patrick started his career in the Rotterdam Police Force rising to senior officer level.

To be fair I suspect success or failure will mostly come down to how much he is willing to push back on the DfT and how much digging he does to ensure GTR are actually validating the assumptions they are making are true. It does rather seem most of the root causes (going from the recent London Reconnections article) of the problems could have been seen coming but no one was willing to realign the project plan to the reality rapidly steaming towards them.

He did well at London Midland. Think he’s recently been working at GTR since leaving LM when the franchise expired.

Let’s hope he can run it without too much interference from Wilkinson and co at the DFT.

They'll probably leave him to do it as long as he doesn't expose their contribution to the current mess. If he does, then the knives will be out.

Back in March this year, Patrick Verwer had already been appointed to GTR's C-Suite as the new COO, effective September 2018, to replace incumbent Chief Operations Officer, Nick Brown.

In this announcement dated 22 March 2018, Charles Horton had said of outgoing Nick Brown:
"When Nick joined us in the autumn of 2016 he made a commitment to be with us for a two-year period to see through the introduction of the new timetable and the wider changes we have made. With that commitment due to be fulfilled by the autumn, Nick has decided that this will be the right time for him to move on and pursue his wider interests."

I wonder whether Brown had already foreseen the coming storm by the start of the year?

(Nick Brown has a quite complete and comprehensive LinkedIn profile, but somehow has forgotten to mention his role at Thameslink since 2016. Job interview question #1:- "so tell us about what you've been doing for the past two years, Mr Brown".)

Does anyone now fancy throwing their hat in the ring for head Operations wallah at GTR?

Nick only signed a 2 year contract originally so always planned to leave in September.
They were already in big trouble with late rolling stock acceptance (rates) by Easter 2016 during his predecessor Dyan's tenure. Rumour has it that Dyan was surprised to be appointed HS1 CEO (to which she is much more suited than being GTR COO).

Patrick is just starting 10 weeks early!
