At one time convention seemed to dictate that Guard/Driver communication on diesel units took the form of buzzers whilst electric units had bells. What is the situation on units currently in service where there is still provision for Guard operation as opposed to DOO?

I'm not sure where you are drawing the line on "modern", but I do know that class 323 EMUs have a buzzer. AFAIK most stuff newer than that has a "beep" rather than a bell or buzzer, both EMU and DMU.

To be honest it is very random as to whether Bell or Buzz or Beep sounds are used. Back in BR days it was all EMUs and DEMUs had a bell sound and all DMUs had a buzz sound. But these days with modern units it is just completely random.

Here is all of the ones that i have heard myself on modern era trains:

Also one other random thing regarding bells is that the 455s are the only trains where the Driver can not return the bell codes. There is no bell button in the cab on the 455s for the Driver to use to return the bells.

Hopefully others on here can fill in some of the blanks but as you can see it seem to vary so much. I suppose the train manufacturers just choose what sounds to use.

One thing to point out is that in the past BR built the vast majority of trains themselves. Most of the first generation EMUs and DEMUs and first generation DMUs were built directly by them. So they were able to specify which trains had a bell sound or a buzz sound and there was some consistency. But these days it is all private manufacturers who are just left to choose any random sound themselves.

Lastly on the topic of bells i believe these are the current codes:

1 = Stop
1-2 = Close Doors (Power Doors)
2 = Ready To Start
2-1 = Token Received (RETB Lines)
2-2 = Do Not Open Doors
3 = Set Back
3-1 = Lock Central Door Locking (Slam Doors)
3-2 = Release Doors (Power Doors)
3-2-1 = Testing Doors
3-3 = Driver Or Guard To Attend Telephone
3-3-1 = Release Central Door Locking (Slam Doors)
4 = Slow Down
5 = Driver Or Guard Leaving The Train
6 = Draw Forward
9 = Police Assistance Required

Back when i was a Guard i am pretty sure there was a 7 and 8 as well. I think 7 might have been something to do with a brake test or something like that and i think 8 might have been something to do with the DEMUs but my memory from that far back is very poor.

A 376 is a bell (same as 375), for the list above.
Thank you. That makes sense it is the same. I presumed that was the case but the 376s are the one and only class of Electrostar that has never had Guards so i was not entirely sure.

I suppose there are also the 378s, which I imagine will be the same. @baz962 should be able to confirm for those!

http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/features/buzzer.shtm has
7Correct vacuum indicated in rear guards van during test
but no mention of 8.

EDIT Also the current rule book at https://www.rssb.co.uk/-/media/Proj.../21/11/38/GERM8000-master-module-Iss-13-1.pdf no longer has 7 or 8:

The 458 is a beep
Thank you. Is that the same for both the cab and the saloon? I believe the saloon panels were retrofitted so i know some retrofitted panels often have a different sound? I guess the 334s and 460s probably have the same beep too.

I suppose there are also the 378s, which I imagine will be the same. @baz962 should be able to confirm for those!
Yes i believe they were indeed the same. I remember using the 378s when they had Guards until 2014 and i am pretty sure they had the same exact bell sound. I can also remember the 357s which had Guards on 12 coach formations until 2017 and the 379s which had Guards on the Manningtree to Harwich branch in 2015 and they were both the same bells too. It is a shame the Aventra trains use beeps rather than bells as they are the successor of the Electrostar trains.

Mk4s & 175s are a beep too
Thank you. Now that you mention the 175s i believe i remember definitely hearing the 180s having a beep sound too.

Ah that sounds familar. I thought that 7 was to do with vacuum brakes or something. I wonder what 8 could have been. My only vague memory was that it was for something on the DEMUs but i might be remembering wrong.

I think 8 was something to do with fire in the engine room on a DEMU or do not enter engine room. I’m sure there’s some ex Thumper traincrew on the forum who could give a proper answer,@Big Jumby 74 perhaps?

Ah that sounds a bit familiar so that might be it. I used to work the Thumpers when i was a Guard but i wish my memory from back then was better.

700s (and I'm guessing probably the 717s too?) have the same beep as the 707s

I would also guess that being an Aventra, 710s would be the same as 701s
You are probably right. I would imagine all of the Aventra trains have the same sound and all of the Desiro City trains have the same sound.

507/508 are bells throughout the train including saloon panels.
Thank you. That is good to hear they kept the bells on the saloon panels as most of the retrofitted saloon panels seen on other units seem to have newer beep sounds.

Agreed. I also much prefer the traditional bell sound. The Desiro buzzer is even worse; a truly pathetic sounding thing.

Yes the worst one is on the Desiro City trains. Much louder than the original Desiro trains. The beep sound on the Desiro City is the loudest ear piercing beep i have heard of any trains. It is as loud as the door release sounds. It also plays throughout the entire train at every single door panel.

Sadly it seems like we are moving away from using bells. Electrostar trains are the only trains built since privitisation to have a bell on them. Everything else is just beeps these days.

Maybe it is just nostalgia from working as a Guard on old slam door EMUs and DEMUs but i always thought bells work the best. It is the clearest sound. Unlike beeps and buzzes it can not really be confused with any other sound you might hear on the train or at the station.

Another question regarding bells. Does anyone know what was the first train in the UK to have bells or buzzers or beepers. Originally all trains just used flags but i am presuming it must have been one of the very early multiple units in the mid 1900s or maybe slightly earlier.

And also in the days of guards on London Transport trains was there any guard/driver bell communication?

Northern line 1980s one bell to start I think, although my memory should not be relied upon!

EDIT District Dave's forum (https://districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/26782/guards-starting-signal) confirms:
Recently I watched a YouTube video which had been shot in 1980 in the cab of the Epping/Ongar shuttle. The guard's starting signal of a single "ding" could clearly be heard at each station. In the days of guard-staffed trains, was a single "ding" (as opposed to the more commonly-used double ring) the accepted signal across the whole system, or was this just a local eccentricity?

LT/LU standard was always one bell push.
and goes on to say that was the only defined bell code.

380s are beeps in cabs and panels

385s is a buzzer in the cab and a buzzy sounding beep in the saloon panel.

ScotRail 156 are beeps in cabs and centre panels

ScotRail 158s are beeps in the cab but buzzers in the centre

ScotRail 170s are beeps in cabs (401-424 470/471)
425 onwards are all buzzers in the cabs.
All 170 saloon panels are beeps

ScotRail HSTs are all beeps in the coaches, assuming cabs are as well.

I can only comment on the TFW 230, they have buzzers in the cab and beeps in the saloon. I would imagine the ex WMT 230s and the Island Line 484s are the same but I've never been on either so maybe somebody else can confirm.

MK5s (sleeper) are very loud beeps at panels but are not used. Dispatch is done via 2 way radios

My understanding is they were all bells until the DMU’s had fire systems fitted, that’s when they started using buzzers.

Probably because the locos aren't wired up for driver/guard buzzers (well, beepers in this case)?
It's common dispatch procedure to not use bells/buzzers in order to keep things quiet for sleeping passengers. Riviera dispatch is with a green flag & RA.

Oh I'm not complaining but I also suspect that the 57s also don't have any means of using bells/buzzers either!

The 57s have no communications to the train. Just old fashioned brake pipe, main res pipe and train supply jumpers.

No, theres no jumper cable at present to provide comms between guard/driver, the 92s have buzzers in the cabs though. (if they still work)

Ah interesting! Wonder if that's a legacy of their original Nightstar role?
