Hello all,

My last email stated that my application was with the hiring manager. Has anyone who applied heard anything back as off yet?

Hey all,

I applied on the 16/03 and passed everything online. I received the same application with hiring manager email the same day and not had anything from them directly ever since.

I did however, contact recruitment myself on the 18/05 and they told me that they had loads of applications come through and they were still reviewing them (it would take a couple of weeks to hear back from recruitment).

I know I am not the same person. This is what I had back on the 23rd June 2023.

Dear Kenneth,

Thank you for your application for the role of Trainee Train Driver Fratton, reference 021790 with Great Western Railway. We really appreciate the time you have taken and your commitment to completing our online application process.

We received an excellent response to this advertising due to our social media campaign, which was very successful. However, due to the extremely large volume of applications, we are unable to progress everyone.
Unfortunately on this occasion you haven't been successful. That doesn't mean you can't apply for another role within Great Western Railway although you'll need to wait six months before applying for the same role again.
If not already done so, you will be able to register for job alerts, so that the web site notifies you when further vacancies arise in your area
Although we can't provide specific feedback at this stage, we do wish you well in the future.
Please do not reply to this email.

Kind regards,

GWR Recruitment Team

Always a huge disappointment to get that rejection notification ☹️

But is the expectation to hold a train diving licence already? Whilst it quotes a ‘while training’ salary, the job role doesn’t explicitly say Trainee Depot Driver, either.

It breaks down tho the training fee which wouldn't be there otherwise. Plus if I remember correctly, depot drivers for SWR have driver IDs not Licenses unless that's changed or was Wimbledon Depot only. Im pretty sure they'd know that barely any qualified drivers would drop to depot driver. I can't remember either if I've ever seen a Qualified Depot Driver campaign either.

Honestly no news is good news in this game..until you get into the talent pool itself..
Tbf, I am not in a rush. If it all worked in my favour I’d get a driver position with SWR, since I am already there and know my depot, and not GWR. But we’ll see, I’m happy to wait for GWR’s response.

Far more chance getting in than there used to be. First never recruited for trainees at all at this depot for ten years between 2005 and 2015. However the depot has gone from a senior driver's depot to a depot full of new drivers in the space of four years and the establishment is far greater despite losing Brighton work.

They drive the Cardiff line, but how much of it do Fratton drivers cover? It must be well over 3 hours each way if it’s the whole route, which must make their shifts really long.

Fratton drivers sign all the way to Cardiff Central.

It’s circa 3hrs15 minutes each way (give or take) on most services to/from Cardiff Central. Along with a 30 minute PNB at Cardiff, that would equate to a turn length of 7 hours, so definitely not that long.

There are two Cardiff turns at Fratton, one in the morning at 7hrs 59mins and one in the afternoon at 9hrs 13mins.

That sounds about right as I assume they’d go down to the Harbour and as part of those diagrams too.
