Social democracies which invest in their population top the table should come as no surprise. Also worth noting that Mexico and Canada are ranked higher than the neighbouring US, showing that being the world's largest economy doesn't immediately make one a happy nation.

Seems like the Nordic nations are the place to be, and the Iranians are right miseries...no surprise there then!
I’m sure there are many in the Nordic nations who would disagree with the happiness report. Just like there are happy/ unhappy people in all nations of the world.
Total agreement -- much individual belying of the "received generalities", many paradoxes. Some Nordic nations anyway, reckoned gloom-prone re many inhabitants (climate, and winter dark, can't be helpful with that). I've got the impression from various sources, that Iran -- despite a great deal of very horrible, and repressive, stuff -- is a surprisingly cheery and light-hearted place: pleasant, friendly and agreeable people, good at finding fun -- and folk kind and agreeable to foreign visitors; even supposed Moslem fanatics "don't make it personal". Never been there -- admittedly not high on my list -- but feel that wouldn't mind doing so, if the chance came my way -- "see if it's true".

I think there are more ‘normals’ in Iran than we imagine. I once exchanged postcards for a while with an Iranian lad and the only sniff of anything amiss was that he insisted that the cards I sent him should be placed inside a plain envelope for mailing.

More "normals" virtually everywhere, I'd figure; would suspect that ordinary citizens even of North Korea, have ordinary preoccupations and focuses, more of the time than we'd imagine ...

There are 2 pages and 147 countries. Not sure why you would mention Iran, rather than one of the 48 countries below it.
Because Iran has a repressive regime, and is a significant player in numerous conflicts - if the population isn't happy with their lot, that regime just might fall.
