I know doubling back isn't allowed but as the ticket is valid to Shrewsbury is doubling back allowed between Shrewsbury/Church Stretten & Craven Arms? Or is this only allowed when purchased from Shrewsbury or Church Stretten to get you back to your origin station.
I'd like to go Abergavenny, Swansea, via HOW to Shrewsbury, Abergavenny.

Heart of Wales Rover? Do you mean Heart of Wales railcard which is available to residents of certain postcodes along the heart of Wales line? Do you qualify / already have one of these? If so you just need to purchase tickets for the journeys you wish to carry out.

Or do you mean the HoW day/two day ranger? If you mean these ,travel is unlimited in the area shown on the map so doubling back isn't an issue.

You do not need to alight at Craven Arms you can continue to Shrewsbury, it is classed as part of the circular journey.

The Heart of Wales Day Ranger is £39, for 2days £59. Allows one circuit from any station en route. eg Abergavenny to Swansea to Shrewsbury via HOW to Abergavenny.

No, it's a Rover so you can double back to your heart's content, within the area of validity of course

Not sure what happened with above post #6. This rover is not one you can use as you wish. It's for one circuit in one direction only with no doubling back (except on the Shrewsbury link).
I quote "Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger offers a circular journey in either direction around the circuit between Cardiff Central - Craven Arms - Shrewsbury - Llandrindod Wells - Llanelli - Swansea - Cardiff Central on Arriva Trains Wales services. The journey can start at any station on the designated circuit."

The HOW has it's own website http://www.heart-of-wales.co.uk/ to promote the area.

That seems to contradict ATW website:-

Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger

The Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger offers you a circular one-day tour with unlimited travel in either direction on the Heart of Wales Line.

And the terms & conditions:-

Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger

1. You can travel by train anytime Monday to Fridays, and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

2. At least one part of your journey must be made up or down the Heart of Wales Line (between Swansea and Shrewsbury via Llandrindod Wells).

3. Each Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger allows one day train travel. ............

The restriction on use only one way is on the Marches and SW Main Line, for obvious reasons. It is in some ways akin to a Round Robin in Northern England.
