The cheapest way will not be thetrainline :)

Please can you tell us how many passengers will be travelling (adults/children under 16/under 5), whether you are prepared to accept tickets restricted to a specific service, whether you are arriving at Prestwick Airport by air, if Sheffield is your final destination or you have a local connection, whether you have or are eligible for a Railcard, and whether by 2:30 you mean 2:30pm (1430 in railway times) as there are no trains at the other 2:30 :)

Well, there's advances at £58.50 available on the 1552 Prestwick to Glasgow Central connecting to the 1655 from Glasgow Central to Sheffield (dest: Birmingham N St).

Trainscanbecheaper gives splitting at Langwathby, Garsdale, and Denby Dale for £43.90, but that'll take until the heat death of the universe or thereabouts!

Is it price per person? To Glasgow centre we can get within an hour from shuttle train service connecting Glasgow airport to Glasgow centre so its not a problem. Cheapest we found from Glasgow cebtre to sheffield Is £50 per person which Is really a lot.

Take the following itinerary:

Prestwick Intl Airport 15:52 SR
Glasgow Central 16:36

Glasgow Central 17:06 TP
Manchester Victoria 20:23

Manchester Victoria 20:33 TP (Rail replacement bus)
Manchester Piccadilly 20:42

Manchester Piccadilly 21:20 TP
Sheffield 22:12

Search separately for tickets from Prestwick Airport-Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Piccadilly-Sheffield and you will find advances for £64 and £10 respectively, for both of you, giving a grand total of £74. Not half-bad for such short notice!

Unless your shuttle has already been paid for, I wouldn't bother because it's only £4 extra to travel all the way from the airport as opposed to from Central.

All airline passengers traveling to/from Prestwick airport railway station receive 50% discount from/to anywhere in Scotland on the standard rail fare. See also this page. This offer makes it likely that you would save money by buying more than one ticket for your Prestwick Airport - Sheffield journey.

Prestwick Airport - Sheffield is a long journey, made longer by engineering work planned for Sunday 1 September. The cheapest tickets I can find are:

2 half-price Singles Prestwick Airport - Lockerbie @ £11.80 = £23.60
2 Advance Singles Lockerbie - Preston (Lancs) @ £12 = £24
2 Advance Singles Preston (Lancs) - Sheffield @ £12 = £24
Total £35.80 each = £71.60.

This combination is currently available on:

1621 Prestwick Airport - Glasgow Central 1705
1735 Glasgow Central - 1831 Lockerbie 1832 - Preston (Lancs) 2002
2047 Preston (Lancs) - Manchester Victoria 2123
Tram Manchester Victoria - Manchester Piccadilly
2215 Manchester Piccadilly - Sheffield 2304.

The Advance tickets are valid only on the train(s) specified. The Prestwick - Lockerbie tickets can be bought on the Prestwick - Glasgow train because there is no booking office at Prestwick Airport railway station. If you catch an earlier train from Prestwick, that's fine but you still need to wait in Glasgow for the 1735 departure because that's the train on which you start using your Lockerbie - Preston Advance ticket at 1832. The price above does not include the price of the Manchester tram (£1.40 each iirc).

The Advance tickets are likely to increase in price, and should be bought now to obtain the £12 fares.
