I've just found out I've got to go bristol Saturday coming back Sunday
Premier inn wanted 89 for night, Hilton price 79 for double room, or 94 with breakfast! How the hell on earth can premier inn possibly consider charging more than Hilton!
Just thought I should share for all to take a quick look at companys like Hilton before booking dearer premier inn rooms

Don't go off the Hilton name though. The one on the outskirts of Bristol is not 4* standard at all, it's about the same as a Premier Inn. I have stayed there and it was nothing special, although perfectly acceptable for £65/night.

3/5 on Tripadvisor - although of course always take this with a huge pinch of salt. There are Premier Inns higher in the rankings on the TripAdvisor list for Bristol.

Always shop around for hotels. If the Premier Inn had plenty of bookings they would hold their price. Looks like the Hilton were worried about empty rooms so dropped their price.

Hotels make nothing out of empty rooms. As long as they cover the direct costs of cleaning and laundry + some sort of margin they will fill an otherwise empty room.

Holiday or Express by Holiday Inn are often cheaper as well. Or Hampton by Hilton (cheapo Hilton !!)

Of the Big Chains I would say from my experience Marriott is the best overall - but often the dearest.

Went on Laterooms.com yesterday to book a room in Leeds today before my assessment centre tomorrow. Found a good price, went direct to the hotel website and it was £5 cheaper direct!

normally the case, laterooms.com charge a broker fee to the customer and not the hotel!

i just started this thread really to encourage other members to consider looking at perhaps what would traditionally be dearer hotel chains, who seem to have brought their prices in line with premier inn etc. I would normally not even considered looking at hilton, holiday inn etc so believe others are the same!

a lot of the lower scorers are moaning about the bar prices, and say they have marked down because of the extorianate bar prices!

Yes, but as I mentioned don't think that all Hiltons are the same standard, they're not. The one in Bristol is much closer to Premier Inn standard.

Well, a massive pinch of salt is always required with TripAdvisor but it can be useful.

When I booked The Greyfriars Hotel recently in St Andrews (the day before)
Late Rooms was cheaper than the Hotels own website. I could have rung I suppose but just shows its not always cheaper to go direct.

Hotels nearly always have high Bar prices - most Premier Inns are beside Pubs or Chain restaurants with lower prices.

When we are visiting anywhere we haven't been before, I spend ages researching accommodation on the web. I try Hotels Combined, Trivago, and hotels own websites, before reading a lot of Tripadvisor reviews to try and get a 'feel' for the place.

Without wishing to boast, I have found excellent deals at many nice hotels all over the UK and abroad. But you have to do the work to get the rewards!

Stayed in Stansted Airport hilton in august this year because it was the cheapest available online @£60 for a night.

Worried that i'd look like a proper pleb, half expected it to be full of dashing James Bond airline captain types surrounded by stunning air hostesses lol but -even though there were a few pilots on the courtesy bus- the poor blokes all looked too shattered to fly a bed, never mind sup martinis until the small hours!

On the bad side, the air con was feeble and the bathroom very average, however the bed was lovely and comfy and the staff -in particular the bar staff- were brilliant :)

Also the buffet breakfast was excellent, with eggs fried fresh for you, high quality sausages, nice thick bacon, good coffee and all the trimmings- set me up for the whole day and i'm not small!

All in all I'd stay there again :)

Ps bar prices were ok too, around £3- £3:50 for a pint of real ale.

I hope you stood in for those tired pilots. It seems horrible to think those air hostesses went to waste...!

Not a bad price on the old real ale front, I suppose. £3.90 for a pint of strongbow in Leeds (no real ale in the hotel).

Oh, and jonmorris0844? Ha ha ha!

Hotels vary considerably across the brand. Hotel rooms vary considerably across the same hotel.

In the last 10 years, I've spent over 500 nights working away from home throughout England - always staying in around 4* or equivalent, and there are a few real horrors out there.

Sometimes, when I've seen the bathrooms - or the size of the bed, I've wished that I'd chosen the local travel/premier inn.

In a major hotel in central Manchester, I had a "hot-list" of rooms that I'd refuse to take - the rest were fine.

When staying at a major hotel near Sheffield, I popped back to hotel one lunchtime to collect something I'd forgotten. Only to walk straight into a business conference. The room was a multi-purpose room that could be converted either into a bedroom or break-out room.

The hotel had cocked up a booking, removed the bed... Locked all my stuff away then set it up as a conference room for the day hoping I'd never notice...

Wasn't impressed.

At Stansted, the home of Ryanair and easyJet, not a chance!

To be fair, that's also true at the budget end of the market. There are certain Travelodges which are quite nasty, but there are also many others that are absolutely fine, and occasionally very good ones (often ex-Ramadas e.t.c where they've kept fittings).

I found this when going to see Rammstein last year. We went to Manchester so I looked up the travelodges and premier inns and was horrified at the prices - I suspect a lot of people had just booked with them expecting them to be cheaper so they were charging as much as they could. We ended up booking into a city centre 4* hotel for about half the price - I didn't see anyone else there who looked like they were going to the gig (of course if I'd been going on my own I'd have probably stayed at Hatter's hostel or found an all-night club).

99 is more than 79 last time I checked, although I'm assuming pricing structure has caused an increase since your post! All other priced rooms show as sold out.
Glad I started this now as shown me a load of other companies and sites to try as well avoiding travelodge and p.I

I wouldn't say avoid them - just don't assume they'll be cheaper.

I'm staying in one at Marylebone on Sunday - but it was 30-odd quid.

I've never had a bad experience in a Premier Inn, and only been in a few somewhat disappointing Travelodge's (and they're usually quite obvious if they look old from the outside).

However, it's still worth checking for other prices as they are like any airline or TOC in offering those lovely headline 'advance' deals that go quickly!
