Trying to plan a family holiday.

Probably going to end up in Taunton area for a few days.

There are several railway museums in the area, and wonder if someone could recommend a top 5 of places to visit!

There's not all that many railway museums in the area - the Yeovil Railway Centre springs to mind, but AFAIK it's only fairly small. There is also the new M Shed at Bristol, which I believe has a section about the railways, but it's not solely transport based.

In terms of preserved lines, the WSR is the obvious one being a couple of miles up the road. There is also the East Somerset Railway, but I'm not sure what it's like or whether it's worth the journey. The South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh is easy to get to - less than 45 minutes down the M5 and A38. The Paignton and Dartmouth Railway is also a great day out, especially if you get the ferry across to Dartmouth itself. Getting there would probably be easiest by train from Taunton or Tiverton Parkway (depending on where exactly you're staying).

Slightly further afield, there's the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway just the other side of Exmoor - not a full day in itself but from Taunton you'll probably want to go via Lynton and Lynmouth where you can take the Cliff Railway. If you're prepared to travel a bit more, then there's the Swanage Railway in Dorset (probably just over an hour away).

Anyone who remembers the Bristol Industrial Museum will be disappointed by what it has been superceded by- there really isn't much in the actual museum about industry anymore.. but having said that, the harbour railway is quite interesting.

East Somerset Railway is a great place to visit too, not so 'commercial' as the WSR, and a VERY 'British' 'throwback to those classic days when branch trains were run for the public, and not for profit....

Lovely picture, Ace!

mawallace - From Taunton station, you can easily hop on the train and head down to Totnes - journey time is about an hour. From Totnes station, you can take a short 5 minute walk to the South Devon Railway, probably one of the nicest preserved railways in the country with a variety of steam and diesel motive power.

I haven't been to the last two on the list but I've heard they're worth visiting.

Non Railway - these two are some way from Taunton but they're close to each other, so they could easily be visited on the same day - at a push you might be able to squeeze in the Yeovil Railway Centre too, as that's in the same general area.
