As an off-chute from the 'viewings thread', does any one know of any hotels next to railway lines ? (apart from 'the sidings')

There must be thousands - many in central London for example.

But as a starter for ten the Raddison Blu in Cardiff has excellent views.

Bewley's overlooks Manchester Airport station if you get the right room.

There must be a few in Edinburgh overlooking Waverley.

Given how many stations were built with hotels next door, I suspect there will be rich pickings in this thread. Even if you are limiting it to hotels where you can see tracks from bedroom windows then there should be scores of examples.

I'll start the ball rolling with one in London. The Danubius Hotel Regents Park. (Map: http://goo.gl/maps/ODVqm ) It's opposite Lords cricket ground, five minutes walk from Regents Park, ten minutes walk from that zebra crossing on Abbey Road and if you get a room with a south facing window then you should be able to see pretty much every train which comes into or goes out of Marylebone station.

Margate has a Premier Inn next to the station.

Additionally, the MacDonald hotel in Manchester has rooms which overlook Platforms 13/14 and the lines out of Piccadilly.

Also the Renaissance hotel at St Pancras!

This could be quite a long list!!

Park Plaza Riverbank in London overlooks the SWT lines near to Vauxhall and there is a Marriott near to the DLR tracks by West India Quay station if that counts. There's a new Sleeperz hotel overlooking the ECML just by Newcastle station.

Holiday Inn Express Watford Junction is a particularly good one, I remember watching the highland sleeper depart from my room. Also, Holiday Inn Express Slough is adjacent to the station.

A few years ago somebody proposed starting 'RailLodge'-travel lodge type places on disused land at stations. Don't think anything ever came from it. Unless anybody knows any different?!

If light rail counts, then for Metrolink there are hotels overlooking MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, St Peter's Square, Piccadilly Gardens and Bury (and probably others).

There are lots in Germany. InterCity Hotels are generally right next to, or within, the station and an added benefit of staying there is the use of local public transport for free. Some Ibis hotels are within the station too, for example in Dusseldorf the entrance to the Ibis is through a door off the station concourse.

The new Travelodge at Vauxhall has already been mentioned, there's also one near Waterloo East right next to the line (I think it's Southwark) and also at Waterloo East is the Union Jack Club which some people on here will be eligable to stay at - I've got some decent phots from my room on one of the higher floors when I've stayed there.

There are various B&Bs overlooking the line at Dawlish although whether you have a few of the line will depend on which room you stay in.

Another good one is Leeds Central Travelodge. Many of the rooms overlook the approaches to Leeds station, which on a late evening is HST after HST!

There's a new Travelodge near Clapham Junction, on the left as you travel from London.

I've stayed at the Premier Inn at Westfield Stratford which has views into the International Station, you can see the Overground line from beyond Hackney Wick station, the DLR going into Stratford International and distant views of trains going into Stratford Regional (all from room 1003).

Stayed at the Travelodge marylebone last year. Decent enough night, and adjacent to Marylebone Station. May be a bit pricey though.

Similarly there's a Travelodge just along from Cardiff Central, and i believe one near Queen Street Station too. The one near Central is above the 'Spoons pub, which was formerly part of the Great Western Hotel.

Like as suggested in more urban conurbations large chain places such as Travelodge, Premier Inn et all will be quite prevalent. More coastal towns may be more your good old B&B.

Stayed at the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle last year. My room had a window, overlooking the car park, facing onto one end of the station and I had a great view of all the trains coming in and out, as well as the the bridge and castle.

If we're going International, then I had a very good view of Val de Fontenay RER station from my hotel in Paris last week!

Here's the view I had from my room. No trains in the picture though.

It depends of your on about open or closed stations ?

The Holiday Inn ( Royal Victoria Station Hotel ) still overlooks the site of Sheffield Victoria Station and the freight line to Stocksbridge

The Grand Hotel at Torquay (formerly belonging to the GWR) is right outside the station. I stayed there last year, it's not bad and you can see the line from quite a few rooms.

The Crewe Arms in Crewe overlooks the northern end of the platforms there. You get a good view of arrivals and departures, but you also have the sound of the station announcer to contend with from early in the morning - still an enjoyable stay though.

Although I've never stayed there, the Jurys Inn in Nottingham is adjacent to the station and I'd imagine rooms at the front will provide a good view over Eastcroft depot and the eastern approaches to the station.

The Travelodge at Dumbarton has views over the West Highland Line/North Clyde line - well, the rooms at the back of the hotel anyway. It's very close but doesn't really disturb with sleep.
Incidentally it's also very convenient for a road trip up to the West Highlands as it's ON the A82. Hardly even a diversion!

The Travelodge at Macclesfield overlooks the railway and station. The missus was NOT impressed although with the windows closed you could hardly hear the trains.

The Jury's Inn in Nottingham has some reasonable views of the railway. On one side you get the station and on the other Eastcroft TMD.
