Morning all

Is there a cheaper way of getting by train from Huddersfield to Stalybridge and back today other than £7 return with railcard?

It seems a lot for such a short trip. Is it a victim of being at the edge of two different PTE's?

Cheers

Unfortunately that's the cheapest way; and yes for the same reason that the couple of miles between Marsden (Yorks) and Greenfield is an eye-watering £5.60 day single.

Thanks for the quick reply. Must be tough for people regularly going across boundaries. I note it is only £2.65 more from Leeds to Stalybridge.

Yep - I also reckon it drives a lot of Huddersfield leisure travellers into Leeds rather than Manchester. £12 for a CDR to go shopping for a couple of hours is prohibitively expensive IMO, whereas to Leeds it's half the price.

I was once told it was due to the high cost of using the Standedge Tunnel, don't know if that's correct or not, maybe someone could enlighten us.

In the end we're off to Sheffield via Penistone - a very fair £5.90 return with railcard. And a very busy 158 too!

That's what I thought! I was expecting a Leyland National or Alexander "bus"!

It is full to standing though!

Penistone line has become very busy in recent months - not uncommon to have one or two further ticket sellers on board in addition to the guard. I believe there's a diagrammed 158 on Saturdays.

I think the "two PTEs" explanation is more likely - or rather, that the fares or set by neither. You could compare fares on the Calder Valley Line which is in the same situation. Or indeed fares at stations outside the WY boundary - there always used to be a big hike between Steeton & Silsden and Cononley/Skipton, the result being vast numbers of cars parked in or near the car park at S & S.

PTEs subsidise the tickets within their areas, which is why other tickets appear to be more expensive. This is partly why Metro in West Yorks now have MetroCard add ons to stations such as Skipton and Harrogate.
