Thinking of going to Innsbruck for a few days in the new year, am I right in thinking that the "weekly ticket Tirol" would cover all public transport in innsbruck (including to and from the airport) and a few day trips outside innsbruck in the Tirol region? Seems quite good value for 50 euros for the week. Can this be purchased at the airport at all?

Buy it at your leisure in advance on VVT web site tickets.vvt.at, or ÖBBtickets app or web site so you only need one account for most public transport tickets in Austria (apart from Westbahn, RegioJet and the like)

In Austria every ´Land´=province has its own like Verbund-style (PTE if you´re old enough in GB) integrated fare system. Means that indeed this ticket is valid in all of Tirol-and that also includes 2 lines going via Italy to Ost-Tirol (there is also a much faster express bus linking) and via Germany to the Reutte line. Technically one is not allowed to board/detrain on those sections=only through rides.
Austria has not as cheap as in DE, but got before the german monthly came the 1/2/3€/day seasons: for city/Land/Nation, but for at least 1 year from start. Making this effectively 14€ for 1 week for Tirol.
So even if buying at airport is not possible, the cost of a few€ to reach main station and buy there would also be well worth the investment

dutchflyer: I pointed out that there's no need to worry about buying at the airport.

Edit: however IVB, the Innsbruck operator, web site shows a sales point (Vorverkaufsstelle) at the airport. These are usually in convenience shops but there is no detail where in the airport.

Land Verkehrsverbund sell online and also ÖBB sell online all(?) Land and city tickets: go to All Products, Regional Tickets, Tirol (or City Tickets etc) which makes it easy for an intermittent visitor. Verkehrsverbund sites seem to be skinned versions of ÖBB so it's just a question of where you create an account.

IVB also indicate a ticket machine at the airport, which looks to be right at the bus stop.
