Interrail Passes

Seeing as there is a 25% off sale at the minute. Can I ask a question as to how do these passed work?

If I buy the 4 days in a week pass for travel in France or Spain does that give me the freedom to just get on any train at any time of day?

The prices seem really reasonable.

Whilst the prices are indeed, very reasonable, you need to be aware of the many caveats that come with an Inter Rail. As @rvdborgt says, the linked webpage is a good starting point.

Using your example of France & Spain, you have to make compulsory reservations on TGV and certain Intercite services (also some TER services).

For Spain, you have to reserve seats on most services, other than local ones.

There are countries where you can just jump on (almost) any train. These include Switzerland, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands & Belgium. Even here, there are exceptions (Eurostar & certain international services).

Reading the link it applies that each journey will cost an additional €10/€20 is that the case?

I plan on making around 8/9 journeys which suddenly then makes the £100 pass nearly triple in price if having to pay €20 a journey.

Yes, that’s correct. Unless you’re prepared to use slower services in France, the reservation fees are unavoidable. In Spain, it makes it nigh on impossible to get very far very quickly.

That's correct for domestic TGVs and some of the Intercité services. International TGVs can be more expensive. Some Intercité services have optional €1.60 reservations. In Spain, the cost varies, usually between €4 and €10 in 2nd class, depending on the train type.

I'd suggest to make a plan first and then check where you need reservations, what they would cost and if you don't like the result, to see whether you can reduce the number of reservations.

Interrail is better in some countries than others. For your example of France and Spain, Interrail is generally quite poor value for money. It won't be valid on open access operators (e.g. OuiGo) and you will have to pay a €10 reservation fee at minimum (depending on capacity, it will go up later) on TGV routes and a few others. It is possible to travel with regional services, but it will take a long time.

My advice is to have a look on the SNCF website to see if you can find some cheap journeys and forego the Interrail pass. It may be cheaper if you book sufficiently far in advance.

Yes reservations in France/Spain are expensive.

It's generally not worth using Interrail passes for travel in France/Spain; it's much better value to use the passes in more sensible countries such as Switzerland and Germany.

Yeah, just looking now at advance fares on the SNCF website.

I’m a bit disappointed that these Interrail passes represent such poor value for money.

It really depends on the case. For long(er) distances not booked a long time in advance, an Interrail pass can still be very good value.

Sure, it's also fine if you're passing through the country (e.g. going from France to Germany), but in the OP's example of wanting to focus exclusively on France and Spain I think it would be cheaper finding advance fares.

Otherwise 9 long distance journeys is a minimum of €90-$180

If you make reservations (eg via Eurostar or RailEurope) with an Interail pass, do you get a refund if you cancel?
The Eurostar passholder reservation fee of €30 is not trivial if you change your mind or travel date/time.
I can't find anything on the excellent seat61 site about this.

This map shows that France and Spain are red countries, ie not worth it. (Happy to credit it to whoever produced it but can’t remember who)

It depends on the train and where you book. There is no general answer.
Some reservations can't be refunded or exchanges, some can be, and some can't be refunded but can be changed, sometimes for a fee.
SNCF reservations can often be fully refunded or exchanged without extra costs.
Eurostar reservations can't be refunded. They can be exchanged and for the London routes, that comes with a fee.

That's not really a reservation fee, it is a quota controlled fare.

That makes Interrail operate like a discount card in France, rather than a pass.

Thank you. More head-scratching!

It depends how you use the pass. If you're using it in situations where you could have bought a cheap ticket and/ or you are paying high reservation fees, then the pass is poor value.

But if you're using it to travel somewhere where tickets are expensive, and reservations not needed (UK, Germany, Switzerland) the pass is incredible value.

If I buy a 4 day / 1 month pass and start off with a peak train down to London, I've pretty much covered the cost of the pass already, before I've left the country

I’ll be leaving from Bradford to London on a £20 Grand Central advance ticket.

Then I’ll be taking advantage of the cheap £38 Eurostar tickets.

My plan was then to get an Interrail Pass for a weeks travelling in France but the amount of trips with potentially €10/€20 reservations is making it cost prohibitive.

It all depends. Especially daily distances, whether you want inflexible booked long ahead or to be able to replan as you go, e.g. around weather. And how far you are from London.

E.g. Lille-Marseille tomorrow morning, first, booked now costs Eur 200 or more. Or Interrail pass plus a Eur20 reservation (direct, maybe more via Paris).

Hamburg-Munich is similar, Eur 212 on the morning ICEs tomorrow, dropping to 98 for evening arrivals.

4 day 1st pass normally GBP 305, currently GBP 230, cheaper if you're under 28 or over 60, plus 2xEur38 Eurostar then looks a bargain.

And for me a first anytime single to Euston (which I would never buy full price) is around 200 so another bonus.

In that case, hunt around Ouigo routes booked far in advance for long distance legs, and get to grips with which regions have cheap multi-day passes on TER. E.g. you can do Paris (rather Marne-La-Vallée) to Marseille for Eur 16 booked now for mid-January. Or Paris-Montpellier for Eur 25 then enjoy the LiO Eur 10/day TER multi-daypass valid throughout Occitanie.

Given this thread is about how the passes work, it's as good a place as any to ask if anyone is having the same problem I am currently having. Basically, the app can't find local stations. I've checked that everything is switched on in my 'phone in respect of apps knowing my location and I've also deleted the app and added it again to ensure I have the latest version. The app itself knows my location but can't find any local stations when it come to using the planner. All I can think is that I don't currently have a pass that is running, but that wasn't a problem in the past and it always showed me the nearest stations (there are several within a couple of km so it's not that I'm in the middle of nowhere). Before I contact Interrail I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has had the same problem or if it's a known fault.

AFAIK it's a known issue in the latest release. Stations don't appear anymore on the map and apparently that also makes the app unable to find nearby stations. If it bothers you (I rarely use that function), then do contact customer service:

Thanks. I rarely use it myself but it's helpful to know it's a known issue and not a problem with my 'phone.

One issue after another with that wretched app. It really isn’t good enough to still have so many issues with an app that can cost the user a sizeable sum if they get the wrong guard.

I regard this as quite a small issue.

There is still a history of repeated issues with it.
The first 2 years felt more like beta testing (2020-2022) but IMO the app is now past that stage. It doesn't mean there are no bugs anymore but I haven't seen any serious ones for quite a while now.
Have you used it yourself recently, with an active pass?

Not a chance. Too many issues reported with it - I will stick to paper until it is fundamentally reliable for a lengthy time.

That's totally fine but then you shouldn't make assumptions about the app.
