I have a mystery I wonder if anyone can assist with. My wife and I borh have ITSO type bus passes issued by Leeds council. We have them as we are registered blind. Within West Yorkshire they allow us to take a companion on the bus with us. I believe the graphic top right on the picture of my pass attached indicates this. In West Yorkshire I think the card indicates to the driver it’s a companion pass as I believe the driver has to press a button to accept the card.
Our passes work fine throughout West Yorkshire. They also work fine everywhere else in England we have travelled, but don’t provide for a companion which is fine.
The only time we have issues is when we try and use an East Yorkshire bus around Scarborough or Pickering. The ticket machine makes a horrible noise and the driver has to check the card. (Just to confirm, the passes work fine on Arriva and Transdev buses around Scarborough).
Every time the East Yorkshire drivers insist our passes are faulty. Perhaps one is, perhaps both mine and my wife’s are faulty, but we know several other visually impaired people with passes like ours and their’s don’t work in East Yorkshire buses either, but do on all the other buses! So I think it may be an East Yorkshire Buses fault.
I raised the issue with East Yorkshire last year and they apologised and said they would ensure their drivers were aware of the issue and would do a software update to their ticket machines to solve the problem.
Well a year later the passes still don’t work and the driver told me today i needed ti get my card sorted out as he knew his ticket machine was fine.
I wonder if there is something on the card’s chip indicating it’s a companion pass which is upsetting the East Yorkshire ticket machines, but does not upset orher bus companies machibes?
Any clues as to what the problem could be? If it is an East Yorkshire issue, who would be the best contact to resolve the issue?
Any help much appreciated.
