I would suggest that rather than going to Transport Focus, a better idea would be to put some pressure on whoever's website (XC/NRE?) was unclear/wrong in the first place, so that it's clear for anyone looking up the information in the future.

The website matches XC's response and the guard's position as well. The only thing that doesn't match is iKB.

To avoid any problems on the train with my offpeak and anytime split tickets I asked at the booking office for a 1st crosscountry weekend upgrade for the complete journey, plus the 1st reservations and plusbus. I encountered no problems at all. On the train, I assume the train manager cannot now object?
Thanks.

Well, not unless they fail to comply with contract law. It's highly unlikely, but I don't think we can rule it out. If they did, you'd need to contact the company regarding compensation.

Thanks, I will let you know how I get on in 6 weeks time.

Personally, I would present my tickets to the TM and if there are any problems I would simply state that the booking office confirmed it would be fine any have thus issued the upgrade with reservations. If the TM insists there is a problem I would refuse to pay anymore on the basis you have been "mis-sold the upgrade". I would not imply at the time that it is in fact the TM who is in the wrong and I would move back into standard class. I would then seek a refund and compensation afterwards.

Response received today:

Given the difference with what is quoted in the iKB, I've referred to Transport Focus to see what they think.
Any progress? If Transport Focus have not resolved it, you may wish to escalate it further (and I'd encourage you to, as XC shouldn't be allowed to get away with this)

I made the return journey yesterday with all 26 tickets for two people to Reading. On the outward journey the TM checked my tickets and there were no problems. I think it just depends on which TM it is and on this occasion it was a TM that was a supporter of my football team!
On the return journey, again no problems. What did amuse me was that in the XC voyager 1st class coach there were about a dozen people and 9 were I think travelling on train company passes as the TM only checked my 2 tickets and one other person! He seemed to know the other passengers.
