Following the curtailment of the line at Kilmacolm before its ultimate closure, the station building was at least retained (and modified somewhat) becoming what was the ‘only pub in the village’ as ‘The Carriages’ and managed to carve a reasonable existence.

I’ve just heard that it has closed with immediate effect, whether anyone will take it over as a going concern is uncertain, and as there is high demand for housing in the area, there is a possibility the site could be cleared for a new build scheme.

I remember only discovering Kilmacolm in early 2014 and being surprised that there was a closure of a line which had an hourly service so long after Beeching.

Once it had a railway station, now it doesn't even have something as fundamental and basic as a pub! While I don't live anywhere near there, I hope it re-opens, these kind of closures are a sad indictment of our times.

It’s really the loss of the building that worries me - you could walk out to the beer garden (platform) and sit at the tables. It may not have a service but at least you could imagine it…. Something that is impossible if replaced by housing. As the Elderslie to Gourock trackbed is still part of the Sustrans cycle route 75, I’m tempted to do it by bike before this summer ends. I’ll let the thread update if there’s a reopening.
