Have just booked tickets to Leuchars for a day trip next week while we're staying in Arbroath. Quick question - I believe there's a bus service into St Andrews town centre from Leuchars station... does it tie in with the arrival times of the trains (from both directions?), and how much does it cost? Just so we can have the appropriate money ready. Can't use our English concessionary passes in Scotland unfortunately.

go to this site -

enter Leuchars (Rail station drop down) and St. Andrews (bus station dropdown)

It is route 99 normally which runs both ways (Dundee to St. Andrews via Leuchars and vice versa).

you can buy the tickets there online meaning that you are ready to go when you arrive without needing money available at all.

You used to be able to buy rail tickets to St Andrews Bus, which included bus travel Leuchars to St Andrews. Is that still the case?

All the buses take contactless, and they are every 7 minutes during the day so no need to tie into the rail timetable.

Looks online to still be possible. Don’t know how the fare compares to buying a train ticket to Leuchars separate from the bus fare to St Andrews though.

Rail tickets seem to be priced at £4.60 more for a single through to 'St Andrews Bus' compared with just to Leuchars. (Return rail tickets look to be priced at £9.20 more). Think a paper ticket bought on the bus is the exact same £4.60 for a single.

Wow that's a bit steep for a 12 minute journey. Do they do a return bus ticket? I've already bought the train tickets.

Is it possible to buy a ticket that covers both operators? Must be frustrating having to wait for a 99 when a 92 is ready to depart
Doesn't a through railbus ticket with the destination of 'St Andrew Bus' not achieve that? Or is it operator specific?

The frequency of the 99 means that this isn't much of an issue.

Thanks, we'll maybe take a sandwich!
There is, or maybe was, don't know if it's still there an excellent bakery that does a doughnut which will send your cholesterol through the roof and is pure heart attack fodder....that's if you manage to eat the whole doughnut, a miracle in itself if you do.

As others have said though, like Wilmslow, over priced for everything !

I did this during a FoS week in Nov 22. As otehr have said, buses are very frequent. Bus stop in Leuchars is obvious right outside station, Bus Station in St Andrews is a bit tucked away but the buses also run down the main road out of town with a couple of stops near the Golf hotels etc. Though St Andrews was well worth the trip, both the town, the beach and the Golf courses (which you seem to be able to walk around, within reason)

I guess we'll follow everyone else who gets off it then! Don't want to end up on some remote golf course though.
It's a very small town! From the bus station, it's about a 3 minute walk to North st, Market st and South st. Right turn out of the station, cross about 50m up the road.

Fisher & Donaldson still exist and you still get those lethal doughnuts. You now also get an ice cream filled version as well

There are also two excellent Italian ice cream parlours - Luvians in Market Street and Janetta's in South Street. Almost next door to Janetta's is the Criterion bar - known to locals and students as the 'Cri'. They do a selection of well-kept real ales and good value homemade pies....amongst other bar food.

Just back. Had a lovely day, St Andrews is much bigger than we expected. Got a 99 bus at the station, we were asked if we were coming back, and sold Stagecoach DayRider tickets for £8.50 each. Thought that was a bit expensive but we didn’t have any choice. Paid with contactless card.

As for expensive refreshments, I’m pleased to report that Greggs charge the same prices as they do in the rest of the UK!

St Andrews is a bit short on places to get a reasonably priced cup of tea and sit down, we were very lucky to get a table in Greggs where we killed half an hour before heading back to the bus station.

I’ve never seen so many young people in a town, apparently there are over 10,000 students there. It seems to be Freshers week and they were all milling around.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed St Andrews. My wife was at university there - starting fifty years ago - and we were married there in the Burgh Hall just over seventeen years ago. With the fine weather, I'm surprised that you didn't go for an ice cream! The two ice cream parlours mentioned upthread also do tea and coffee. If your short taster tempts you to go back for a longer stay in the future, I would recommend going in the university holidays and staying in one of the student residences. Agnes Blackadder Hall - fifteen minutes walk from the centre - has clean, functional en-suite doubles for £85 per night....with a superb and abundant breakfast included. The other place that does good-value teas, coffees, snacks and sandwiches is the Students' Union café in North Street, which is open to all comers. Avoid most of the hotels - including the Premier Inn. They are ruinously-expensive, catering mainly for super-rich American golfers and their families.

Thank you! That’s really useful information.

Oh and we did have an ice cream - a Magnum from Sainsbury’s! A mere £2.20 each.

We’ve already said we’ll go back again now we’ve had an initial recce. I think the university holidays is a good plan.

Glad you enjoyed your time! The 99 route really has to be the top money make for Stagecoach E Scot, the pricing compared to say the daily caps to use the London Tube are extortion.
