I'd like to travel in and around Maastricht on buses, then get a train to Eindhoven, then travel in and around Eindhoven on buses.

Is that possible with a single ranger ticket? It would be on a Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks

There is no single ticket covering Eindhoven and Maastricht. You will have to buy a separate ticket for the train, or use an OV-Chipkaart.

For all buses south of Echt (and therefore including all buses in the Maastricht area) you have the Dagkaart Zuid-Limburg for €5.50

http://www.veolia-transport.nl/limb...en/buskaarten/dagkaarten-z-limburg/index.html

Unfortunately, there is no longer any day ticket covering Eindhoven. There used to be a particularly cheap ticket covering the wider region around Eindhoven at €3, but it got withdrawn a couple of years ago. Noord-Brabant has a day ticket but excludes Hermes, which operate nearly all buses in Eindhoven.

There are four Arriva routes reaching Eindhoven that you could use the Noord-Brabant day ticket on

http://wiki.ovinnederland.nl/wiki/Concessie_Oost-Brabant

You could, however, just pay-as-you-go using an OV-Chipkaart, which is cheaper than it sounds. In Eindhoven, the fare is €0.137 per km, plus the €0.86 boarding fee. You only pay the boarding fee if it is more than 35 minutes since you got off your last bus so if you travel continuously for 20 km without exceeding the 35 minute gap between buses then you would pay €3.60. If you are only planning on going around the town then that may be good enough. (Same applies to Maastricht as well so it might not be worth getting the Veolia day ticket).

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reizen_met_de_OV-chipkaart_in_het_stads-_en_streekvervoer#Noord-Brabant

A summary of all day ticket in the Netherlands can be found here:

http://www.rover.nl/reizen-met-ov/binnenland/g-provinciale-dagkaarten

(Google Translate will work on it).

This sort of trip was very easy before the OV-Chipkaart as you could get a day ticket covering all buses in the country, and an even cheaper version in the summer. However, there are sometimes offers in supermarkets giving near nationwide coverage at a low price.

If you are travelling in the new year then it might be worth checking again in case the range of tickets has changed with the new fares.

I have a spare anonymous OV card you can use, if you want. Saves you a few quid to purchase one.

Send me a PM if you want to arrange that. Otherwise, as Radamfi says, there's only the South Limburg day rider for the buses, alas.

1. Limburg prvince is served by Veolia-buses and some trains too. There are daytickets for either north or south of the province, and that for 5,50 is BUS only. You can pay a little more and also get the Veolia (ONLY!!!) trains-but only out off the peaks. They run to Valkenburg-Heerlen-Kerkrade.
2.there is also the EUREGIO dayticket-16 eur, but valid for 2 persons on sat/sun or ANY holiday in the 3 countries, that is valid :
-in NL the same as Veolia, incl. its trains-all day
-in DE on the whole of the AVV verbund
-in BE: in VLaanderen in Limburg province-they also have one, incl some NMBS trains-Liege-Hasselt. Thereis a fast bus Hasselt-to near NL-border below Eindhoven (Achel), from where you can connect into NL-by bus(-payable).
In Wallonie in Liege province, TEC buses and some trainlines-not ICE-HIspeed.
Cannot buy from NS, as its not valid on NS, but easy on any bus from driver.

The EU Regio ticket is a great ticket, especially at weekends when 2 adults can travel at the same price as 1.

http://www.avv.de/ressorts/euregio/die-euregio-maas-rhein/

for more information. See the Downloads in the top right hand corner for maps.

I experienced some embarrassment yesterday with a euregio ticket. I was in Aachen at the weekend and picked up a leaflet for the 2014 ticket which I was pleasantly surprised to see shows validity to Roermond this year so decided to finish off the weekend with a trip over some lines I hadn't been on before. However on the approach to Roermond my ticket was checked and I was told it was not valid. I showed the leaflet (see also the map in the link) to the inspector but she would not accept it. She was checking this on a hand-held device. She decided not to charge me but it was embarrassing and my trip to Maastricht was a bit uncomfortable as I feared I might be challenged again. I have emailed NS and will let you know the response.

Here's the link to the leaflet:

How she could dispute it when you had the leaflet is beyond me. That said they could make the leaflet clearer as some tourists might well think the grey/white lines are valid as well

It is only since 1-4-14, when the price went up to 18 eur, that it is now also (again, after a long lapse) valid on NS south of Roermond. It is now even listed in the Dutch NS-website under special offers.
Note that in BE it is also NOT valid on all the NMBS=SNCB trains in the whole area, again esp. in their Limburg province. But it is on theLIJN buses. Limited to Liege-Hasselt there.

That euregio map is very confusing, one map in the PDF says something's valid yet the map available at stations says it's not (or vice-versa, I've not looked at my 2013 copy for a while).

However that ticket is exceptionally good value for the area it covers! Maastricht - Liege Guillemins - Aachen - Maastricht on walk-up tickets would cost a fortune, and yet this ticket covers all that and much more.

I'm not sure that the map is that confusing, though it could be clearer and may cause a problem if your eyesight isn't great. And the change is obvious if you compare with the 2013 leaflet. Also the words 'in Nederland alle treinen' give it away - in 2013 it spelled out the restrictions.

Still no word from NS - I also provided a link to a newspaper article announcing the change.

Dear Mr Capybara,

I must apologize for the behaviour of my collegue. Your ticket was vallet to travel to Roermond and Maastricht. I will inform our personal on the train, so your future travellings can take place in a pleasant way.

Yours sincerely,

I wasn't really criticising the ticket inspector, but the information she was provided with. But good to get a response.
