Just wondered if there is a list anywhere that I could print out? I am planning to try... and visit all railway stations in england, scotland and wales.I will take a cuddly toy and take a photo of it on or next to the station sign.. I know its going to be a long process but I want to visit ones like the ones that have one train a week as well!

You can purchase it, but why would you want to when you can download it for free?

You might as well wait a couple of weeks or so anyway because the new one for the period December '09 - May '10, will become available.

I think you can get them from WHS for around £15, but they're not lightweight things, they weigh about 2kg & then there's the supplement as well.

You'd do better to have a netbook + power adaptor, USB 3G dongle & you'd get more upto date information as you can plot your next journey live, so you can avoid route closures, engineering work all at the touch of a button.

Or you could use a 3G enabled phone (Iphone, Nokia 5800) & use the mobile version of the NRE website.

You do realise it's going to take years, right?

The Network Rail lists posted above will give you what you need if you are only visiting stations in Great Britain. If you want a list of all stations in the UK though you would need to include the stations in Northern Ireland.

London, Great Britain!
When you say 'every' station is Britain, do you mean all the suburban services? Like the London Underground system as well?

I'd like to do the same here but visiting all the stations in Victoria is a more realistic and achievable goal than nation wide, but maybe do one state at a time perhaps.

You should set up some kind of Facebook fan page so followers can track your journey, etc and upload pics to it.

Good luck to you.

Probably not the tube as it isnt part of the UK railway network

yeah I dont mind.. going to be fun!

I dont think i will be able to get a photo of me at all the stations, so a photo of the station sign will suffice in some cases!

Is there an official number of EXACTLY how many stations there are (excluding underground and various metro systems)?

Would it really take years? I'd of thought 6 months if passing through counts, and 10 - 12 months otherwise if you did it in one go

I guess passing though doesn't count if he wants a photo at each one? This could be damm awkward in places with an infrequent service like the far north. In fact, there's areas where it could more realistically be done by bus!

I pulled a list from the NR website;
I took out those marked '(ANY)', apart from the Heathrow ones, I also took out the 'by bus' and '<cie>' but didn't make any other changes.

http://h1.ripway.com/fattony/ukstations.html

There are 2,953 of them - but that's counting 6 at Heathrow.

Maybe we could charter a special train to go from Penzance to Wick, calling at all 2,951 stations in between.

Imagine the announcement: "This is the 0600 train for Wick, calling at ......"

I reckon on the far north etc services, if he speaks very very nicely to the Guard and said Guard is in a good mood, there'd be enough time to get a quick snap at each station. Might even be able to persuade the guard to take the photos?

Don't know if anyone was aware of this:- I wasn't ! A few out of date errors but quite useful none the less.

Wow, that's amazing. Has someone been to every station in the country to take those pics? It even has Sugar Loaf on there!

One I've tried it doesn't have is Dovey Junction, can anyone spot any others?

And any interesting shots? Tyseley station has the Securicor van collecting the station cash and there's also a freight train going through one plat!

Edit: ROFL, I love the pic of the ticket machine on platform 1 at Filton Abbey Wood (FIT).

Geordie back from exile.
Quite an interesting look around the country's stations there.

At Penzance the bench seat at the London end of P3/P4 is chained to a lamp post as well as being bolted to the ground. Are there any determined bench thieves in that part of Cornwall or is it the lamp post they are after?

Up the Tyne Valley there are some nice views at Wylam of the signal box and an EWS train going through P2.

I wonder if the person taking the photos likes Indian food as there are some pretty good photos of two restaurants on Hexham and Corbridge stations.

Well if you have your pic taken, would you still post them on the net? A cuddly toy? Hmmm, a Gnome would be much more funny I reckon haha.

If you get off to have the pic taken it lengthens your trip given the infrequent services on some lines!

A friend of mine has visited every mainline station in Britain, which took him several years.

There are some restricted stations (Lympstone Commando where you need the appropriate coloured beret! and British Steel Redcar, which is in the steelworks spring to mind)

Still, good luck
