Hi all,
Just spoken to a colleague who was trying to book online and collect tickets from Uttoxeter - which has no Ticket Office or TVM - so therefore does not appear in a drop down of stations that you can collect from.

Is there a list of stations where collection of pre-booked tickets is not possible?

All of those lists and websites are very out of date. I have just had a very quick look and can already find 56 stations which now have TVMs with Ticket Collection facilities but are mentioned as not having any.

Can you give a couple of examples? (station names, not sites sorry!)

TIA

Burley Park in Leeds for a start. Not sure how long that's had a machine, but getting on for at least 2 years.

Thanks for that - i'll leave my list up for reference as having checked a few examples it is consistent with Knowledgebase XML / NRE for example;

• Appledore
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/apd/details.html
(no ticket office, no ticket machines)

• Aylesford
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/ayl/details.html
(no ticket office, ticket machines but no collection)

• Winnersh Triangle
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/wti/details.html
(ticket office, ticket machines but no collection)

• Wrabness
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/wrb/details.html
(no ticket office, no ticket machines)

If prepurchase is available NRE shows this separately, and whether available from the ticket office / ticket machines) for example;

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/rdg/details.html

Cheers

Those NRE pages are very out of date as well. The NRE website is notoriously incorrect and out of date when it comes to ticketing. They very rarely update it.

I'm certain I read in Modern Rail a few months ago that someone was undertaking a huge audit to fully update the stations pages on NRE, so that might offer a slight glimmer of hope for future!

A few months before NRE first published their stations pages, I had an idea (which is written in my notebook so I know the date of it!) to basically have the same sort of information for each station, slightly more advanced (my lines would curve if necessary!) and would be crowd-sourced. I wonder whether I should dust off the code I started for this and do it anyway...!

Unfortunately a one off audit is no good if the data is going to be just as out of date in another 5 years time.

This kind of thing requires procedures in place to ensure ongoing validation and updating. For example, for staffed stations, a monthly requirement for a member of station staff to access an internal system to validate the existing station facilities record or advise changes, with those changes automaticallyish incorporated into the Knowledgebase.

Not so straight forward for unstaffed stations, but you get the idea.

All stations on the Robin Hood Line between Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop now have ticket machines. These have been there for at least 6 months now. Some of them are very unreliable and are regularly out of order. They do have a facility to purchase tickets from other stations but that facility always seems to be offline.

Can somebody confirm what I suspect, namely that almost no Merseyrail station has such a TVM? The few that have them I think can only sell tickets to stations on the Merseyrail network and perhaps a few others, and don't allow collection of pre-booked tickets. One exception is Liverpool South Parkway where the TVM is operated by Northern, despite it being a Merseyrail station.

Well I managed to use my knowledge of webpages and HTML to extract a list.

Went into the Trainline site where there is a page with a drop down that lists "all stations where you can collect tickets from a machine" - which then returns a one line bit of text notifying you where the TVM is.

Thankfully the list used in the drop down is coded into the page - so when viewing the page source I get the list of three letter codes and the station name.

Merseyrail stations are staffed full-time, so tickets should still be available, including those purchased online.

Nope, unfortunately not. If I book a trip from local mersey rail station to anywhere else in the country I have to make sure I go to lime street at some point to collect my tickets, it's ridiculous. A few times I've forgotten and had to pay for a single Into the city centre!

About a year ago I tried to collect a prebooked ticket at Liverpool S Parkway. The (Northern administered) TVM was out of action; the Merseyrail booking office clerk was unable to issue it and suggested I went to West Allerton (the next station, which is Merseyrail branded but Northern staffed). The man there was highly amused: I was about the fifth person in the last hour to make the same request. He issued the ticket with no problems but couldn't understand why Parkway couldn't. Especially as they (so he said) had the same machines with the same access to the network as him.

There is nowhere between Liverpool and Chester where you can pick up tickets bought online.

Merseyrail probably see this inconvenience as an opportunity to raise extra revenue by forcing passengers to buy local tickets to reach these two hubs.

I wrote and complained to Merseyrail and Transport Focus but was just fobbed off.

Keighley is incorrect - it states ToD is available during station opening hours, but it's only available during ticket office opening hours which are several hours shorter and always after the first train.
